Jan. 14, Thursday, 7:15pm, “2016 Maine Short Film Festival,” this 100-minute screening features the 14 winning films selected by the festival’s panel of juror, included in the program will be a variety of short presentations on subjects close to Maine’s heart. Maine artists, rivers, farms will all be subjects touched on during this creative showcase. Jan. 15, Friday, 7pm, “National Theatre Live: Jane Eyre,” Almost 170 years on, Charlotte Brontë’s story of the trailblazing Jane is as inspiring as ever. This bold and dynamic production uncovers one woman’s fight for freedom and fulfilment on her own terms. From her beginnings as a destitute orphan, Jane Eyre’s spirited heroine faces life’s obstacles head-on, surviving poverty, injustice and the discovery of bitter betrayal before taking the ultimate decision to follow her heart. This acclaimed re-imagining of Brontë’s masterpiece was first staged by Bristol Old Vic last year, when the story was performed over two evenings. Jan. 16, Saturday, 1pm, “The Met Opera Live in HD! Les Pecheurs de Perles,” Bizet’s gorgeous opera of lust and longing set in the Far East returns to the Met stage for the first time in 100 years. Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leïla, the beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. Her suitors are tenor Matthew Polenzani and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, who sing the lilting duet “Au fond du temple saint,” which opera fans know and adore.
