Maine”s Echo Lake Among Ten Best Lakes for Swimming in the United States

As lakefront property owners, we all know that Maine has numerous hidden gems, including our favorite swimming spots. Though we may like to keep them that way—hidden that is, it appears the world is discovering them.

Anne Harris of Tripping.com recently sent us this message: “The weather may get colder (someday!) but the hospitality and natural beauty of Maine lasts year-round.

I’m writing from Tripping.com, the world’s largest vacation rental search engine. As part of our Web site, we run a popular travel blog, where we try to inspire our users to visit some of the best hidden gems and local favorites around. We recently put together a list of the top lakes for swimming in the US. We considered factors like area amenities, water temperature and safety, reputation, user reviews, and properties in the area to do our rankings.

The U.S. is spotted with over 120,000 lakes; see what made the top 10! I’m happy to say that Echo Lake was a top pick!”

And so, here it is at #5:

“It’s summertime and what better way to get the most out of the long hot days than a day at the lake? This pastime has been a quintessential summer activity forever. So relax, bring a book, let the kids splash around (and take a dip yourself!) at any one of these beautiful U.S. lakes.

5. Echo Lake – Acadia National Park, ME

Echo Lake in Acadia National Park, Maine, is a perfect family vacation spot. For swimming, there is a designated area with a lifeguard, and at it’s deepest point, the water depth is only 66 feet. Echo Lake Beach is the best for swimming, and is staffed with a lifeguard during the summer months. Boasting spectacular views and surrounding trails for hikes, it’s a photographers dream. Be sure to visit the nearby town of Somesville for some quaint and authentic Northeast charm, as well as to see the only fjord on the East Coast.”

Other lakes that made the top ten: Lake George, New York; Redfish Lake, Idaho; Lake McConaughy, Nebraska; Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire; Lake Chalen, Washington; Lake Red Rock, Iowa; Fallen Leaf Lake, California; Lake Carlos, Minnesota; and Spring Lake, California.
