Waterville-Craft-Weekend

“Maine Craft Weekend,” Downtown, Waterville

Oct. 1, Thursday, 7pm, “Fretless,” Canadian band, folk quartet, the group is fiddle-large with each member playing stringed instruments and mixing genres to create a style that is unusual, engaging and innovative, $15, North Church, 12 High St, Farmington. FMI: 207-778-2006, www.folkalley.com.
Oct. 2-4, Friday-Sunday, all day events, “Waterville: Maine Craft Weekend,” Friday night’s activities will include PechaKucha, a creative networking event, followed by a live band at the Waterville Opera House. Saturday will feature artisans creating their works in addition to exhibits by the Waterville Area Art Society in Castonguay Square. Oct. 3, Saturday, 9am-4pm, “Somerset Samplers Quilt Show,” with more than 175 quilts on display made by guild members. There will be vendors selling fabric and quilt supplies, door prizes, and a tea luncheon. Handmade whoopie pie bags, with whoopie pie included, and mug rugs will be sold. Oct. 3, Saturday, 10am-6pm, “Wesserunsett Art Council’s 6th Annual Open Studios Tour,” Southern Somerset County has a thriving arts community which is well represented in others places in Maine and away. Once a year a diverse group of Skowhegan area artists welcome visitors to their studios to see their work in their home/studio environment. See what inspires them, how the view from their window informs their vision and buy a piece of art! 22 artists will be represented this year at 17 different venues in towns that include: Skowhegan, Cornville, Canaan, Athens, Hartland, Ripley, Wellington, Smithfield, Norridgewock, Mercer, Madison and Solon. Oct. 3, Saturday, 5-7:30pm, “Saturday Night on the Farm: Bean Supper, Games, Storytelling,” An evening of fun and games for all ages. Enjoy a delicious baked bean supper with all the fixin’s (coleslaw, cornbread, nutmeg cake) followed by an enjoyable evening of historic games and storytelling. After eating supper family style in the Farmer’s Cottage, find old-fashioned games in the mansion, library, one-room schoolhouse, and meeting house. Try your hand at Euchre, a classic card game enjoyed by the Washburns, or play cribbage, checkers, dominoes, pick-up sticks, and more. Play parlor games in Washburn Family mansion. The first floor of the mansion will be open for tours. At 7pm, “Mercy Lovejoy,” a 19th-century pauper, will pay a visit to the Meeting House and tell you all about the “Strange Happenings of Livermore.” Be ready to laugh when Mercy (portrayed by Willi Irish, Norlands’ director of interpretation and training) shares stories about cursed ponds and empty coffins – fitting tales for the upcoming Halloween season, $7, $3.50/12 and under, Washburn-Norlands Living History Center, 290 Norlands Rd, Livermore.
