Sept. 11, Friday, 5-8pm, “Brunswick 2nd Friday Art Walk,” ten galleries and churches present art works by multiple Maine artists. Local musicians play at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Sept. 11-13, Friday-Sunday, 7pm/Fri and Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore,” among the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan operas, perhaps because of its infectious tunes and well-constructed libretto. Sept. 12, Saturday, 9am-4pm, “Knox County Farm Tour,” visit five fabulous farms in Knox County, Hope’s Edge Farm, Savage Oakes Vineyard, Sweet Season Farm, Great Gardens, and ME Water Buffalo Co. Sept. 12, Saturday, 10am-8:30pm, “Celebrate Bowdoinham,” The day will kick off with the Celebrate Bike Ride at 8am with a 10 and 20 mile ride option. Then the parade starts at 10am, showcasing creative floats from local businesses and organizations. After the Parade, the activities start at the waterfront – rides, exhibits, contests and great food and music- something for everyone! All the kids’ favorites will be back. We’ll see who has the skills and grace with the Lobster Crate Race. Other children’s activities will include, a Coin Scramble, Art Activities with Merrymeeting Arts Center, facepainting, balloons, games and more. There will be music all day in the gazebo with a wide range of local musicians and performers showing their talents. Local food vendors will provide a variety of tasty treats and delectable delights available throughout the day. The Silent Auction is a great opportunity to bid on a wide range of goods and services from around the area and support Celebrate Bowdoinham. While you’re there you can grab a book from the Bowdoinham Public Library’s Annual Book Sale. Sept. 12, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Aardvark Jazz Orchestra,” featuring works by Richard Nelson, called “captivating” (Jazz Improv), “spellbinding” (The Boston Globe), and “beyond category” (Downbeat), the legendary Aardvark Jazz Orchestra opens its historic 43rd season at Bowdoin College with a show of Jazz Americana, featuring the CD-release of Deep River by Brunswick, Maine composer Richard Nelson, plus New Orleans jazz tunes arranged by Aardvark director Mark Harvey, and other selections. Sept. 14, Monday, 4-6pm, “Bath Iron Works Story Trolley Tour,” What goes on behind those iron gates and metal walls? How did BIW gain the reputation of “Bath Built is Best Built?” Learn the answers to those questions and more as a current or former employee of Bath Iron Works serves as your guide, providing the inside story on Maine’s proud shipyard. On this exclusive tour you’ll hear about the history of this famous shipyard and learn how the most advanced ships in the world are constructed. From the 1937 America’s Cup defender to the Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyer DDG 1000, BIW has always been a leader in building the most advanced ships afloat. Your tour begins with an introductory video that takes you behind the scenes to detail the building process and features the employees who take great pride in constructing the Navy’s most advanced warships. You will then board the trolley for a rolling tour through Bath, past the BIW yard where your guide will fill you in on some of the most interesting tidbits of history that occurred in the yard and explain just what it is you are viewing, highlighting key elements that can be seen in the shipyard, Mien Maritime museum, 243 Washington Street, Bath. Sept. 16, Wednesday, 7:30-9pm, “Tom Luther Quintet,” performing their original kinetic jazz, and featuring material from their second album, “Necessity”, released in May of this year.The album “Necessity” was funded as part of a Kickstarter campaign, and was recorded at the Bangor studios of Maine Public Broadcasting. “The piano was really the motivation”, says Tom Luther, pianist and composer for the group. “We’ve played on Rich’s (Tozier) show several times, and each time I threaten to leave with that instrument because of it’s awesome sound and response. There aren’t many instruments like it.” “Necessity” received an enthusiastic review from Brian Kevin of Down East Magazine, who called it “a spellbinding listen”, and heard “genetic links to greats Lennie Tristano and Dave Brubeck”. The album was brought to life by some of Maine’s finest musicians in Mike Whitehead, Gideon Forbes, Duane Edwards, and Jacob Forbes. “I’m in the fortunate position of being surrounded by great musicians, which creates a tremendous opportunity for me as a composer and as a performer.” says Luther, free, The Frontier, 14 Maine St, Brunswick.
