Sept. 4, Friday, 10am-12pm, “Special Tour of Castle Tucker,” complicated relationships, rooms that tell stories, and a changing world where strict unwritten rules determine social success. What are the connections between the wealthy and socially prominent Tuckers of Wiscasset, Maine, and the characters and world of Edith Wharton’s classic novel, The Age of Innocence? Sept. 4-6, Friday-Sunday, various time, “Boothbay Harbor Fest,” kicks off on Labor Day Weekend with a celebration of music, food, fashion, art & healthy living events including brew cluster, harbor crawl, live music, 5k and ½ marathon, fishin’ for fashion, and more, free-$30, Downtown, Boothbay Harbor. Sept. 4-6, Friday-Sunday, 12-4pm, “Camden Windjammer Festival,” fireworks, crate racing, and slippery fish wrangling, the fun starts Friday afternoon with the Maritime Heritage Fair and the arrival of the majestic boats narrated by Captain Jim Sharp, a former schooner captain, offering a wealth of history, lore and seafaring stories. Later that evening, the crews and passengers of the boats take the stage in a talent show featuring music, surprises and plenty of laughs…which leads into a show-stopping fireworks display over Camden Harbor. Saturday’s highlight is the Lobster Crate Race, a chance for the fleet of foot to cross a line of floating crates… without taking a swim. In the Build-A-Boat Contest, teams begin with the same materials and create a wild array of boats that are water-tested on Sunday. New this year is First Fish Relay Race, a fast-paced race involving small slippery fish…sure to be as silly as it sounds. The local Rotary clubs serve up pancakes for breakfast and chowder from local restaurants for lunch on Saturday. Wrap up Saturday with a concert by Suzy Boggus at the Opera House. Sunday afternoon introduces another new event, the Windjammer Mate Certification … a test of seafaring skills. As the sun goes down on Sunday dance harborside with music by DJ Terry Frank. The cruising schooners are open for tours Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Or take a ride on one of the smaller schooners to get a taste of the seafaring life, Downtown Camden, Public Landing, Camden. Sept. 5, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Sierra Leone’s Refugee All-Stars,” internationally acclaimed Sierra Leone’s Refugee All-Stars bring uplifting African sounds, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars was founded by musician Reuben Koroma, a refugee from Sierra Leone’s capital city, Freetown, in order to provide a bit of entertainment and levity to devastated fellow refugees. After a few years of itinerant life in the refugee camps, the members of the band returned home to Freetown, where they continued to play as a group and record music. An eponymous film was made about the band, which featured their story and much of their music, and it was released alongside their debut album, Living Like a Refugee, in 2006. Sept. 6, Sunday, 2pm, “James McMurty,” celebrate summer with great music and great friends in a beautiful setting. And the best part is… it’s all free! Bring the whole family for a day of fun. Food and drink will be available for purchase at each show.
