Aug. 13, Thursday, 1pm, “The Turn of the Screw,” a young governess is left to care for two recently orphaned children in a lonely English manor. She begins to see the specters of the former governess and her lover haunting the children and embarks on a macabre journey to save their souls. But what if the ghosts aren’t real, $10-$30, Theater at Monmouth, 796 Main Street, Monmouth. FMI: 207-933-9999, www.theateratmonmouth.org.
Aug. 13, Thursday, 3pm, “Tricky Britches,” raised in Maine, cured on street corners and next to woodstoves, this string-band is a unique culmination of country, contra-dance, bluegrass, and rock. They’ve played festivals and concerts across the US, Europe, and Hawaii, free, Gardiner Waterfront Park, Water Street, Gardiner. FMI: 207-582-6200, www.trickybritches.com.
Aug. 13-15, Thursday-Saturday, 8pm, “Laughing Stock,” Laughing Stock goes on stage and backstage at The Playhouse, a rustic New England summer theatre, whose ambitious repertory season includes Dracula, Lear, and Charley’s Aunt. The virtuoso farce follows the well-intentioned but over-matched company from outrageous auditions to ego-driven rehearsals through opening nights gone disastrously awry to the elation of a great play well told. Misplaced technical cues, forgotten lines, wrong entrances, eccentric acting, and theater games will tickle the funny bone. A rendition of Auld Lang Syne will dampen the eye. With Laughing Stock, a balance is struck between a depiction of everything that can and usually does go wrong with a genuinely affectionate look at the magic that holds theatre companies together, $17-$35, Lakewood Theater, 76 Theater Road, Madison. FMI: 207-474-7176, www.lakewoodtheater.org.

Aug. 18, Tuesday, 1pm, “The Winter’s Tale,” by William Shakespeare, tragic, romantic, hilarious, and uplifting, The Winter’s Tale is an enchanting story about the evil of jealousy and the power of forgiveness. Filled with mature wisdom infused with youthful optimism, the tale begins with a serious question, moves through lighthearted romance, and ends with a miracle, $10-$30, Theater at Monmouth, 796 Main Street, Monmouth. FMI: 207-933-9999, www.theateratmonmouth.org.
