“Bronze Whale Sculptures,” Rockland

Sept. 4, Thursday, 7:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m., “Bombino,” Meditative and earthy, Niger-based musician BOMBINO conjures the expansiveness of the Sahara landscape with captivating vocals, trancelike guitar playing, and evocative rhythms. Born as Goumar Almoctar in a nomadic Tuareg encampment, he came of age during a time of political upheaval, fleeing with his family to Algeria and returning seven years later to take on music professionally. BOMBINO’s latest release Nomad was named among NPR Music’s 50 Favorite Albums of 2013 and Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of 2013. Tickets $25, The Strand Theatre, 345 Main Street, Rockland. Sept. 5, Friday, 9:00a.m. – 4:00p.m., “Stitches,” “Stitches” presents a new body of work spanning these different thread based media and different techniques including freestyle weaving and free motion quilting. Inspiration has come both from the artist mentors such as Catherine Worthington whose art quilts are well known in Brunswick, and from visiting artists such as Emi Ito who came for a presentation of her work this past winter. The exhibit is rich with texture and color and will include finished pieces as well as raw material for purchase. Join us on September 12th for the Second Friday Artwalk, 5-8pm. Sept. 5, Friday, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., “Bronze Whale Sculptures Highlighted During Art Walk,” Cast bronze sculptures of ten species of whales, correct in every detail, are being featured at The Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. These beautiful sculptures were made by wildlife biologist, Alfred Godin, who also authored and illustrated “Wild Mammals of New England.” Programs about whales will be offered throughout the year to supplement this exhibit, featuring some of the rarest whales in the world. Sept. 5, Friday, 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., “Castlebay in Concert,” Castlebay will present a concert of traditional music. Castlebay has been musically weaving together the heritage of New England and the Celtic lands since 1987. Members Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee have loved and researched traditional music for most of their lives and blend history, legend and experience into their personable performance style. Their concerts feature poignant ballads sung in Lane’s ethereal soprano and Gosbee’s rich baritone interspersed with joyous dance tunes played on Celtic harp, guitar, fiddle and tin whistle.
