August 21, Thursday, 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m., “DaPonte String Quartet Summer Festival – Culture and Catastrophe,” Pianists Frank Glazer and George Lopez joinThis heartwarming story set in the 1940s is of an elderly woman (Carrie Watts)who desires to visit the town where she grew up but is stopped by her meddling daughter-in-law and overprotective son. Determined, Carrie makes the trip as well as new friends along the road, but finds that the town she once knew, is no more. Hackmatack is a summer treat for many. Professional theater in a relaxed country setting. The DaPonte String Quartet for a two-concert festival called “Culture and Catastrophe” commemorating the 100th anniversary of WWI at Bates College in late August.The August 20 program will feature Mr. Glazer on piano performing works by Gabriel Fauré, Johannes Brahms. and Bela Bartok. On Aug. 25, Mr. Lopez joins the quartet to perform works by Claude Debussy and Frank Bridge.. August 23, Saturday, 9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m., “Whitefield Opens New Hiking Trail,” The new Marr’s Ridge Trail will officially open to the public on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 9 AM., it is the first project of the Whitefield Trails Committee formed as a result of the Whitefield community forum held last October, thanks to the generosity of landowner Sandy Benne and the cooperation of the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association, which holds a conservation easement on the property, the public is now welcome to enjoy four miles of trails on this beautiful private property, park in the lot below the sugarhouse on the west side of Hunt’s Meadow Road, midway between Rte 126 and the Cooper Road.
