Simple Living at This Small Lakefront Camp on Mousam Lake, Shapleigh, Maine

A cozy lakefront camp could be yours on Mousam Lake in Shapleigh, Maine. Located at 32 Cattail Loop, this small house may be just right for you as is, though it has the potential for a 30% expansion.

At 420 square feet, the interior features a small kitchen with a full-sized refrigerator, camp-size stove, microwave and double-sink. The main room functions as a living room/bedroom/dining area. You’re best to use multi-purpose furniture, such as a futon couch in here. There is also a bathroom with a shower stall.

Channel your inner creativity as you come up with clever storage and furniture arrangement. This is simple living at its best and can be a true getaway. With smart organization and less stuff, you’ll find this place easy to clean so you can spend more time on the porch and in the lake.

The screened-in porch runs the full length of the house and faces the lake. Owner Ronald tells us, “I love the big porch to read on or just sit and look at the lake and talk with friends.” Outside, you’ll find a level lot, fire pit, sandy beach and dock.
Built in 1933, Ronald purchased the house in ’99. “We loved where it was,” he says, “next to our friends and we can look both ways up and down the cove.” They enjoy watching the loons, ducks and fish.
Just because the camp is small, doesn’t mean you can’t entertain. “We have had a wedding there for our son and all our friends and family come 4th of July weekend and stay for a few days,” says Ron. “Labor Day weekend we have a karaoke party where we would have around 15 to 20 people come and stay in tents or in the camp with us.”
As I mentioned earlier, you do have the option for a 30% expansion and the septic is a two-bedroom design.

The property has 60 feet of frontage on Mousam (pronounced Mouse-am) Lake, which is known for its above average water quality. At 863 acres, Mousam is one of the largest lakes in the area. It’s nestled between the quaint communities of Acton and Shapleigh and is one of southern Maine’s most popular lakes. Ron tells us that they like to frequent Ted’s Clam Hut, which is down the road, and the Mousam Country Store, “where you can pull up in your boat and get gas and something to eat.”
Located only 85 miles from Boston, Mousam Lake is also only minutes from Kittery, York and Kennebunkport, yet if you own lakefront property here, you’ll soon become familiar with the quiet, rural lifestyle.
Though they’ll miss it a lot, and their family and friends don’t want them to sell, it’s time for Ron and his family to move on. That means it’s time for you to move in.
