Contemporary Chalet on Pristine Sebec Lake in Willimantic, Maine

Pristine Sebec Lake in Willimantic, Maine, is the location of this contemporary chalet-style lakefront house. Located at the end of Tim’s Cove Road, the property abuts conservation land, making it rather secluded.

The year-round house features 7 rooms and encompasses 2,080 square feet. The current owners purchased the 1.19-acre lot in 1985. “We cleared it ourselves,” she says, “and then had the driveway and slab put in. The next year, Vinal’s brother, who was a building contractor at the time, built the cottage for us.”

They discovered the property when Vinal was learning to fly a float plane. “We actually looked at Bennett Pond first, but it wasn’t large enough for flying. The realtor then showed us the 11 lots on Tim’s Cove Road facing south, and when we saw how beautiful and quiet the lake was, we jumped at the chance. We encouraged three friends to buy property as well, each of us buying the lot between us with our neighbor for more privacy, but eventually everyone sold their lots before building, except us. We still own the lot before our property with a friend.”

From outside and in, you’ll be struck by how rustic elegance meets contemporary style. On the first floor, open-beamed ceilings and plenty of windows add a spacious feeling to the living and dining rooms. A beautiful fieldstone fireplace and the soft glow of the woodwork throughout these two rooms adds to the warm ambiance. Behind the dining room, a small but functional kitchen provides plenty of counter and cupboard space. There is also a bedroom and bath on this floor.

The upstairs loft includes the master suite with a cathedral ceiling. In the finished walkout basement, you’ll find two additional bedrooms plus a family room and another full bathroom.

The house has a southerly exposure meaning there is sun all day. From the front decks enjoy breathtaking views. “The view is of the cove (Tim’s Cove) and when sitting on the dock to the left is Gibralter Ledge where the picnic area is located,” she tells us. “We see moose and many water birds including loons, mallards, cormorants, eagles and blue herons. There are a variety of beautiful song birds like wood warblers, but also hummingbirds, pileated woodpeckers and barred owls to name a few.”

A wooden walkway leads to the waterfront. The property includes 140 feet of frontage on the lake and a dock system.

Though the home is year-round, winter access is limited. The road is not maintained in the winter. Think snowmobiles. The house is set up for an easy change over if it’s seasonal, but you still want to head north for a weekend or week to snowmobile, cross-country ski, snowshoe and ice fish.

Sebec Lake has clean, clear water with above average water quality. “The lake is still as beautiful and crystal clear now as it was when we first set eyes on it in 1985,” she says. Encompassing 6,362 acres, and stretching for ten miles, Sebec is a Native American term for Great Pond.

The village of Willimantic has a population of under 150, but in its heyday when the Willimantic Linen Company of Connecticut operated a spool mill at Greeley Falls on Wilson Stream, over 400 people lived and worked here. Dover-Foxcroft, with many amenities, is less than a half hour away. The property is located 2.5 hours from Portland, Maine, and just over four hours from Boston–a beautiful drive giving you ample time to switch gears from city life to Maine lakes and mountain life.

Changes in their personal schedules mean it’s time for Vinal and his wife to sell the property. They’re going to miss it but special memories will live on in their minds, e.g. “The gorgeous fieldstone fireplace, the seclusion of being at the end of the road and the fact that we face south and have sun all day long. When there is a full moon, you can go out in a boat right in front of our cottage and watch the sun set and the moon rise.  It’s pretty awesome . . . It is special to us because we designed and built it. But the time has come for another family to enjoy what we have enjoyed, and make their own wonderful memories there.”

Purchase this property and the best of Maine will be right outside your door–snowmobiling, boating, hiking, fishing–year-round fun and relaxation for all. After a day of adventure, unwind on one of the decks or sit by the inviting fireplace. Let 479 Tim’s Cove Road become your year-round sports paradise.
