Lincoln, Maine is situated beside Mattanawcook Pond, literally. The town square is centered around the pond’s western end. In fact, right there on Lake Street is Prince Thomas Park, home to a lakeside gazebo where concerts are held on Friday evenings during the summer, a sandy beach staffed by lifeguards, a boat launch, and a seaplane dock.

The name “Mattanawcook” is Abenaki for “lake that ends almost at the river,” referring to the Penobscot River. This was the name for the town as well until it was incorporated on January 30, 1829, and renamed to honor Enoch Lincoln, a landowner from the area who served as Maine’s sixth governor.
Mattanawcook Pond encompasses 830 acres and has a maximum depth of 20 feet with a mean depth of 9 feet. Fed by several brooks, the lake is one in a chain of three, including Folsom Pond and Crooked Pond. The water quality is below average and there are no known aquatic invasives.
The warmwater fishery features smallmouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel. Since there are thirteen lakes and ponds, plus the Penobscot River and several small streams in Lincoln, anglers refer to the town as a fisherman’s paradise both summer and winter. It’s also a hunter’s dream locale.
Explore the 11.4 mile perimeter via canoe or kayak. The lake extends from town two miles to the wildness of the eastern end, which supports the biggest population of nesting loons in the area. You may also sight a moose, bald eagle, beaver or other wildlife.
There’s plenty to do on Mattanawcook Pond and in the surrounding area. Here you’ll find interstate snowmobiling and four-wheeling trails, fishing, hunting, hiking and white-water  rafting.
When you get off the lake or a nearby trail, you’ll discover that Lincoln’s Main Street and beyond offer a variety of amenities, including shops, restaurants and stores. The town is a beautiful place to visit and a wonderful place to live.
Lincoln is easy to reach. In fact, they say all roads lead to Lincoln. It’s a short drive to the Atlantic Ocean and about 40 minutes from Bangor, one hour from the Canadian border, 3 hours from Portland and 5 hours from Boston. Leave all your busyness behind and let Mattanawcook Pond in Lincoln lure you back year after year.
