Striking Summer Sunsets on Taylor Pond in Auburn, Maine

Maine’s Twin Cities of Lewiston/Auburn offer lakefront property owners a diverse network of hiking trails. Some are city-side with skyline views, others follow the Androscoggin River and one even passes through a peat bog in the heart of Lewiston.



Barker Mill Trail
This trail follows the Little Androscoggin River and can be an out and back along the same half mile trail, or turned into a loop if you return via Mill Street.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Trail Access: Barker Mill Hydroelectric Dam, Mill Street, Auburn
Elf Woods Trail
Created by students from Edward Little High School, the .6 mile trail in the 40-acre park is partially paved and offers a scenic outlook as well as an outdoor amphitheater.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
Trail Access: Minot Avenue and Elm Street intersection, Auburn
Sherwood Forest Conservation Area
Well-blazed trails loop through the mixed forest at this oasis within town. The 78-acre property offers 2.4 miles of trails.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
Trail Access: Sherwood Drive, Auburn
Lewiston-Auburn Greenway Trails
Also known as The Riverwalk, the 1.6 mile trail beside the Androscoggin River offers views of waterfalls and the city skylines. The trail leads through Railroad, Gateway and Veteran’s Memorial Park.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Trail Access: Multiple points in downtowns of both cities
Pettingill Park Trail
The trailhead is located behind the Hastings Community Center/Ingersoll Ice Arena. This half mile loop has several steep inclines and passes through a forest of  hardwoods and conifers.
Degree of Difficulty: Moderate
Trail Access: Pettingill Park Road, Auburn
Mount Apatite Park
Over seven miles of multi-purpose trails pass through this former quarry. About 150 years ago, tourmaline was discovered in the now 325-acre park. Rules apply for amateur mineral explorations.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy-Difficult
Trail Access: Small Road or Stevens Mill Road, Auburn
Franklin Pasture Trail
The paved surface of this .9-mile trail allows for use by rollerbladers, skateboarders, walkers and runners.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Trail Access: Birch Street, Lewiston
Garcelon Bog
Two trails lead into the peat moss bog. Along the boardwalk, interpretive panels explain the ecological significance of this wetland in the heart of Lewiston, which filters stormwater runoff on its way to the Androscoggin River.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Trail Access: Russell Street, Lewiston
David Rancourt River Preserve
A one mile lop follows the shoreline of the Androscoggin River and travels through a mixed hardwood forest.
Degree of Difficulty: Moderate
Trail Access: Tall Pines Drive, Lewiston
Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary
The 372-acre wildlife preserve is criss-crossed by 4.4 miles of trials. The 512’ summit of Thorncrag Hill is the highest point in Lewiston. This preserve is espcially popular with birders.

Trail Access: Montello Street, Lewiston
Lake Auburn Community Center Trails
Behind the community center, a 7.7 mile network of trails pass through fields and woodlands and along stone walls as well as Lake Auburn. Because Lake Auburn is the drinking water supply for the Twin Cities and surrounding communities, no swimming is allowed.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
Trail Access: West Auburn Farm, North Auburn Road, Auburn
