The pond encompasses 1,422 acres and has a mean depth of 44 feet with a maximum depth of 104 feet. It has above average water quality and there are no known invasives.
Beech Hill Pond features a coldwater fishery–favored by lake trout and landlocked salmon. In fact, the pond still stands as the place where the Maine State Record was set in 1958 for a lake trout that weighed 31 pounds, 8 ounces. Can you beat that? Where is the boat ramp? It’s located on West Shore Road.
Located near Ellsworth, Beech Hill Pond is quiet, yet close to everything you need. Besides excellent sports fishing, you’ll enjoy stunning mountain views and crystal, clear water. The Beech Hill Pond Lake Association, formed in 2008, is “all about preserving Beech Hill Pond.” It’s mission statement is the following: “To educate and inform members on ow to preserve and improve Beech Hill Pond and its watershed for quality use by future generations.” In 2010, volunteers worked with the Hancock County Soil and Water Conservation District to conduct a watershed survey. Since them, they received a 319 grant from the Maine DEP, which helps lakefront property owners utilize best management practices to make improvements to their property and help alleviate the flow of phosphorus and other nutrients into the water.
Beech Hill Pond is 4.5 miles long and has a 12.1 mile perimeter–well worth exploring. Along the way, you’ll become familiar with different sections including Head of the Pond, Deep Cove, Turtle Cove and Schoolhouse Cove. And chances are you have plenty of opportunities to see adult loons and bald eagles. According to Maine Audubon, the pond averages 11 adult loons. And it’s been reported that there are two eagle families on the pond.
Otis is a small town that was named for Joseph Otis, a Justice of the Peace who was instrumental in organizing the first town meeting–a form of government that the town continues to follow.
