Lake Pennesseewassee, aka Norway Lake, in Norway, Maine

Hiking in and around Norway, Maine, melds history and scenic views. Walk along Main Street in Norway and you’ll observe an eclectic sampling of architecture. Many buildings were rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1894. Just a few of the buildings to look at include the Norway Memorial Library and its Greek Revival Style built in 1938; the Tucker Block built in the Queen Anne Style in 1894 and currently home to Creative Media and Western Maine Mortgage; the Norway Opera House of 1894, which is home to several new businesses including Fiber & Vine and Rough and Tumble; Stone’s Drug Store built about 1881, which survived the Great Fire and houses Books N Things; the Levi Whitman Building, built in the early 1880s with bragging rights as one of the oldest buildings on Main Street, which is home to Cafe Nomad and Moose Pond Arts and Ecology.

Pennesseewassee Lake, aka Norway Lake,  covers 922 acres just west of town. Its maximum depth is 48 feet. This five mile long lake is accessed from Route 117. At the western end, you’ll find Pennesseewassee Park, with a boat launch, picnic area and playground. The water quality is average.



New Balance Fitness Trail
The short trail located in Pennesseewassee Park features eight exercise stations.

Ordway Grove
The 0.6-mile loop passes though a grove of old growth pines. The land, conserved since the late 1700s, is home to several extremely tall trees, including a 143-foot Eastern White Pine. Spur trails lead to Pennesseewassee Stream.

Trail Access: Pleasant Street, Norway
Roberts Farm Preserve
There are 7.5 miles of trails meandering through the woods and along stonewalls of this former farm. One trail meets ADA requirements and another is a dog-walking trail.

Shepard’s Family Farm Preserve
The former Shepard’s Dairy Farm offers a woodlot and rolling pastureland with views of the Paris hills and Streaked Mountain.

Trail Access: Crocket Ridge Road, Norway
Witt Swamp Preserve
A one-mile loop offers a quiet in-town walk through a mature hemlock forest. The preserve is named for Norway’s first blacksmith, Benjamin Witt.

Trail Access: Pleasant Street, Norway
Riverside and Viking Trails
These trails connect Oxford Hills High School with the middle school. They pass through the woodlands and along the Little Androscoggin River. The Riverside Trail is wheelchair accessible.

Cornwall Nature Preserve
A network of trails passes through the enchanted forest on historic Paris Hill.
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Trail Access: Paris Hill Road, Paris
Crocker Hill
Also known as Brown Mountain, a trail climbs 0.8 miles and passes by an old mill foundation and the entrance to the Crocker Hill Mine. From the summit, enjoy views of the White Mountains.

Trail Access: Thayer Road, South Paris
Singepole Mountain
The 1.5 mile one-way trail leads to the summit overlooking Hall Pond. Close to the top is the old Singepole Quarry.
Degree of Difficulty: Moderate
Trail Access: Brett Hill Road, South Paris
Mount Tir’em
The ledge at the top of the Daniel Brown Trail provides a perfect vantage point to view the lakes and surrounding mountains, including Bear and Pleasant Mountains.

Trail Access: Plummer Hill Road, Waterford
Hawk Mountain
A gradual uphill walk on a gravel road leads to the summit. At the intersection, stay right. During spring and fall migration, the summit ledges are a prime spot to watch the bird of prey for which this mountain was named.
