Lakefront Bungalow On Moose Pond, Denmark, Maine, Beckons You Home

Log-sided Bungalow in Peaceful, Private Setting on Moose Pond, Denmark, Maine

Come for a vacation and stay forever at this cozy lakefront bungalow on Moose Pond in Denmark, Maine. Located at 157 Holiday Shores Drive, the house sits on a waterfront lot, but the price includes a second separately deeded buildable lot. In total, the property consists of eight acres with 316 feet of frontage on the pond. Loon Echo Land Trust owns the adjacent land at the base of Pleasant Mountain. If you like privacy, this is your place.

The charming, year-round house encompasses 1,200 square feet and has seven rooms in total. Enter the first floor and find yourself in the open concept kitchen, dining room with woodstove and living room with cathedral ceiling. A brick chimney separates the latter two spaces. Large windows overlook the waterside porch and offer a grand view of the pond. The master bedroom and a bathroom are also located on this floor.
Step down a spiral staircase to the family room, second bedroom and utility/laundry room. The walkout basement is as charming as the first floor space, with knotty pine and high-end features throughout.
The owner, Peter, describes it best: “From the years our youngest daughter spent as a camper and counselor at Wyonegonic Camps, my wife Cathy and I learned what a gem Moose Pond is. When we learned during a snowy January, more than a decade ago, that a unique property at the very end of Holiday Shores, and adjacent to several thousand acres of conservation trust land, was available, we jumped on the opportunity despite not being able to really see the property, which was covered by about four feet of snow. We fell in love with the location, and Cathy took the “camp” on as a project and transformed a pretty basic, although year-round, cottage into a comfortable, snug home. About the only thing we retained are the knotty pine walls, and have replaced and upgraded most systems by adding the following: new wood floors, new windows, external doors and sliders, wiring, electrical system, roof, bathroom (floor, shower and fixtures), kitchen (tiled floor, counters, appliances, electric fixtures and additional cabinets), heaters (Jøtul upstairs and Monitor downstairs), water pump, Rinnai on-demand water heater, ceramic tile downstairs flooring, new light fixtures and ceiling fans, as well as adding a screened porch facing the water, a wraparound deck, a new dock and replacing the roof. We re-sided the entire house with half-round log, and had a storage shed and wood crib built to match.”
The house sits in an open space on the wooded lot at the base of Pleasant Mountain. Imagine waking up in the morning and climbing the mountain to catch the sunrise before returning for a dip in the pond.  Peter says, “You can hike for hours without hitting a road.” The flat yard slopes gently toward the water, providing space for badminton and volleyball games. Adirondack chairs are placed closer to the water’s edge–inviting conversation or a quiet spot to read. A canoe/kayak rack holds boats begging to be used for an exploration of the many coves and inlets on pristine Moose Pond.
Moose Pond is approximately 11 miles long, has three basins and is known for its clean waters, great swimming, and incredible wildlife habitat. “Just from sitting on the deck or porch,” says Peter, “we have observed many visitors, including deer, fox and raccoon, as well as numerous loons, ducks (mallards and hooded mergansers), heron, bald eagles and, on two occasions, a pileated woodpecker.” Live here and you can watch as a mother duck keeps her ducklings close by, glimpse an eagle swooping down to catch his dinner and fall asleep to the cry of the loons. Unlike some of the area lakes, Moose Pond is much more tranquil–meaning not a lot of boat traffic, waves or noise.
Denmark is a quaint town where community members come together for annual events such as the Sheep Fest and Jam Dam sponsored by the Denmark Arts Center. It’s only a short drive to Bridgton for shopping, dining and theaters–both movie and drive-in. North Conway is a 25-minute drive. From Portland, the bungalow is about fifty minutes away and it’s only 2.5 hours from Boston.
If your dreams include summer days spent water skiing and fishing and winter days spent downhill skiing and ice fishing, then think about making this property yours. Drive in and you’ll know you’ve arrived home for the holidays or any day.
