Oct. 10, Thursday, 7:30-8:30pm, “Poet John Poch,” John Poch is the next writer in the UMF 2013-14 Visiting Writers Series. Oct. 12, Saturday, 10am-4pm, “Fall Festival at Norlands,” Enjoy a day of “old-fashioned” activities for all ages. Learn how to square dance on the front lawn. Play horseshoes, croquet, and the Game of Graces on the back lawn. Children can visit “Caroline’s Closet” and dress up in period clothing. Bring a camera! Help make biscuits and apple butter in the farmer’s cottage. Use the cider press and string apples. Meet Charley—a character from the book written by Donna Marie Seim—who journeyed from the slums of Boston to work on a farm in Greene, Maine in the early 1900s. Learn to milk a cow and pitch coppers just like Charley. Books will be for sale and Ms. Seim will be available for a book signing. Try your hand at proper penmanship in the one-room schoolhouse and see what it takes to earn a Reward of Merit. Make harvest crafts in the kitchen. Tour Mr. Washburn’s house. Take a wagon ride and a guided nature walk. Bid on several themed gift baskets in the silent auction. Corn chowder available from 11 am—2 pm. Kettle corn made on the grounds for $2 bag. Oct. 13, Sunday, 11am-2pm, “Open Farm Sunday with Cabot Creamery Cooperative,” The 49 farm families throughout New England and upstate NY who are member-owners of Cabot Creamery Cooperative invite the public to celebrate local, sustainable dairy farming during “Open Farm Sunday,” Oct. 13th from 11:00am-2:00pm. Maine participating farms include: Krebs Organic Dairy Farm in Starks, ME; Pleasantville Farm in Warren ME; and University of Maine – Witter Farm in Old Town, ME. Visitors will experience the family traditions and local flavors that are Cabot cheese, as guests are invited to meet the farmers, see their cows, join in barnyard activities and of course, sample delicious award-winning Cabot cheese, free, Krebs Organic Dairy Farm, 86 Krebs Road, Starks.
