July 4, Thursday, 10am-2pm, Turner Natural History Club Museum Annual 4th of July Photo Contest and Open House, photo contest is open to all including professionals and amateurs but children are especially urged to enter, there are three categories, birds, animals and landscape, any camera or format, framed or unframed, photos may be entered day of contest starting at 9am, judging at 11am, open house runs 10am-2pm, the museum contains literally thousands of exhibits of the natural world including minerals, sea shells, birds, eggs and nests, sand from all over the world and too many other things to list, prizes awarded and refreshments served, Turner Natural History Club Museum, 442 Turner Center Road, Turner. July 4 and 6, Thursday and Saturday, 11am-4pm, Living History Tours at Norlands, visitors to the site are engaged by people, dressed in period clothing, who portray a local person, someone you might have met had you visited in 1870. It could be someone cooking in the farmer’s cottage, or a Washburn granddaughter, Ada Washburn or Anna Maud Washburn, in the 1867 Washburn mansion, or the school ma’am in the 1853 one-room schoolhouse who will encourage you to practice your mental arithmetic and penmanship using a quill pen under her watchful eye, bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the beautiful 445 acres of fields, forests, and working farmland, $10/adult, $6/12 and under, $25/family rate, Washburn-Norlands Living History Center, 290 Norlands Road, Livermore. July 5-6, Friday and Saturday, 7:30pm, “The Knight of the Burning Pestle,” comedy, imagine Homer and Marge Simpson buying tickets to a play and then climbing on stage to redirect the show as Bart as the star, and you have some idea of the fun unleashed in this show, loaded with laughter and song, this play is a celebration of the way Elizabethan audiences expected to be a part of the action with superlatively silly results, $20-$30, Theater at Monmouth, Cumston Hall, Monmouth.
