Play Golf at the Sanford Country Club on Bauneg Beg Lake in Maine

Sanford Country Club Nestled Beside Bauneg Beg Lake in Sanford, Maine

Lakefront property owners find any excuse to play a round of golf at the Sanford Country Club overlooking Bauneg Beg Lake in Sanford–competition, social life, therapy, exercise, sunshine.

This semi-private club offers public course prices with a country club experience. You don’t have to be a member to play, but membership does have its benefits, including discounts and an invitation to participate in some scrambles.

An elderly gentleman once told me, “You can’t hit the ball if you don’t keep your eye on it.” Sound advice then and now. And it’s that kind of advice that you may get when you play at Sanford Country Club where they’ll make you feel like you’re part of the family. It’s a great mix of personalities, age and skill levels–all with the same goal–to get that little ball in the hole.
Established in 1924 as the Bauneg Beg Country Club, the course reflects the best traditions of golf courses built in the era. Alex T. Chisholm designed the original nine holes. After passing through the hands of various owners, the club was purchased in 1989 by fifteen local business people who expanded it. The second nine opened in 1997.
The course features a state-of-the-art irrigation system and is well-maintained.  The design takes advantage of the properties natural terrain. Towering pines, stonewalls, water obstacles and large granite boulders all provide obstacles along the undulating fairways.
Each hole has four sets of tees. Amenities include a practice range, practice putting green, private lessons with PGA Golf Pro Jon Ellis, food and a full-service bar. Proper dress is required.
The Sanford Country Club is easily accessible from the Maine Turnpike and is located on Route 4. It’s only about 20 minutes from Route 1 in Wells.
The 188-acre Bauneg Beg Lake is southern Maine’s most sizable lake. Apparently the name was originally spelled Bonny Bigg. Bauneg is Scottish for bonny or beautiful and early settlers in the area were Scotsmen.
The Sanford Country Club is the place to visit when you need a break from shopping for a lakefront property, want to play a quick nine after a day on the water, or are hosting a business lunch. And once you are vacationing at your waterfront cottage in southern Maine, this is the perfect place to form friendships as you make time to play 18 holes. In no time you’ll have an expanded social circle.
