Year-round Lakefront Home on Sebago Lake, Maine
This house SOLD for $443,o00 in November 2012 after 296 days on the market. At the water’s edge of Sebago Lake sits this year-round lakefront home overlooking Frye Island and the middle of the Maine’s second largest lake. The house is located at 7 Wild Acres Road on Raymond Cape in Raymond.
It was built in 1985, but the current owners purchased it in 2001. The big draws: very private, calm waterfront and afternoon sunshine. They also enjoy the view to Frye Island.
This 1,040 square-foot house is all on one level and features three bedrooms, a laundry room, dining room, living room, kitchen and outdoor patio. Attached is a two-car garage. The property is meticulous both in and out. If they could add anything, the current owners say they’d add another bathroom, but since there is still an opportunity for a 30% expansion, you might decide to also add a bedroom, sunroom or study–whatever it is that meets your needs. The lawn reaches to the water and is flat and expansive–conducive to large gatherings.
This property receives a great amount of sunshine and has an abundance of it in the afternoon, which is especially good as the days start to cool in late summer and fall. “In late fall and through the winter, you can actually see the sun setting from the yard,” state the owners.
Privacy is the name of the game and that’s what you’ll find here. Trees shelter the house from neighboring homes. That being said, “the neighbors are wonderful and friendly.” In fact, one of them always takes in the trash cans for the owners after trash pick-up day. “We never asked them if they would, they just did it.” The Maine way!
Many memories have been made at their home in Wild Acres. The yard is fabulous (and remember, it’s flat), so they’ve hosted many bocce ball and croquet tournaments. It’s also easy to spread out for fun and fast Frisbee playing. And when you’re ready to settle down for the evening, light a fire in the pit by the water’s edge–the perfect oasis for s’mores, storytelling and stargazing on Sebago Lake.
Raymond Cape is an eight-mile long peninsula that juts out into Sebago Lake. Not far from the property is access to the ferry that services Frye Island from May through October. The island is fun to visit and includes a nine-hole public golf course. Islanders and visitors alike enjoy Frye’s Leap General Store & Cafe. And then there’s the lore that surrounds Frye’s Leap–so named for a hunter, Captain Frye, who, when chased by Indians, jumped from a cliff and landed on snow, rather than in the frigid Sebago Lake, thus surviving. Traces of pictographs painted by Indians to depict this adventure are still faintly visible on the rock surface.
“The best feature of the lake is that it is Sebago Lake . . . big, beautiful and clean Sebago Lake!!! You can boat, swim, see the mountains or just sit at the water’s edge and enjoy it,” note the current owners. Sebago is an Indian name meaning “great stretch of water.” It’s eight miles wide and ten miles long. The water quality is above average and it supplies drinking water for the City of Portland, thus the southernmost portion of the lake is restricted to any boating or swimming.
On the waterfront, the owners have seen ducks and loons, but deer and moose are also occasionally sited along the shoreline and in the wooded areas.
Since this lakefront property is just four miles from Route 302, there is easy access to both Windham and Naples. You’ll find a great choice of restaurants and lots to do in either town.
