Puffer’s Pond in Dexter, Maine
Puffer’s Pond in Dexter, Maine is a place where lakefront property owners can slow down and kick back. It’s small, at only 115 acres, with a 3.6 mile perimeter to explore.
The average depth of the
spring-fed pond is approximately 16 feet, with the deepest part at 52 feet. Puffer’s Pond drains into Sebasticook Lake. Along with Lake Wassookeag, it’s part of the Dexter Lakes Association. Volunteer monitors test for
water quality, which is average.
The pond is
also known as Echo Lake. In fact, on the maps you’ll see the name Echo Lake because it was legally changed years ago, but locals still refer to it by its former name. The pond was
originally named for Matthias Puffer, the sixth son of two of Dexter’s original settlers, Daniel and Chloe Puffer.
Year-round recreational opportunities are abundant in this
Maine Highlands area. Swim, fish, boat, hike, mountain bike, ski, snowshoe–you can do it all here. Play golf or tennis. There is a
municipal golf course in Dexter and there are others nearby, including
Belgrade Lakes Golf Course, Maple Lane Golf Course and
Augusta Country Club. If you love to antique, you’ll find plenty of treasures in the area. But most of all, don’t forget to relax on the dock or deck of your waterfront property.
Sunsets on the pond are spectacular–to admire and/or photograph. And while you have your camera out, you might see
a variety of wildlife–perhaps a moose, deer or wild turkey. Turtles can be spotted sunning on rocks or logs along the shoreline. Watch and listen for loons.
What fish will I catch in Puffer’s Pond? The
coldwater fishery includes brook trout and smallmouth bass. And where is the boat launch? A
trailered boat launch is located off Route 94 at the southwest end of the pond.
Dexter is a
small central Maine community of about 5,000 people. The pond is only about 15 miles northwest of Augusta, Maine’s capital city. Bangor and Waterville are both less than an hour away.
