The spring-fed lake encompasses 1,152 acres and has a maximum depth of 86 feet with a mean depth of 27 feet. It was named by the Penobscot Indians for its “shining water.” Today, the water still shines and it’s the third cleanest lake in Maine. The water quality is above average.

Is there a boat launch? Yes, it’s located at Ronco Park, where folks can also go to picnic, swim and enjoy the playground. The launch is run by the Dexter Fish and Game. Dexter has a year-round population of about 5,000 people. It’s located in the heart of Maine’s snowmobile and ATV country. From Lake Wassookeag, you’ll have easy access to ITS 84, which opens up the entire state to you.
Also in Dexter, is the Dexter Municipal Golf Course, a nine-hole course with a driving range–the perfect place to spend a few hours chasing that little white ball before heading back to the lake. Downhill skiing is only 30 minutes away at Eaton Mountain.
The little town of Dexter was named for statesman Samuel Dexter. It may be small, but offers all of the amenities. Main Street bustles with activity as people duck in and out of stores including Reny’s Department Store and Mainely Crafts. For a historical look at the town, be sure to visit the Grist Mill Museum, Abbott Museum, the Miller House and Carr School House. Part of the downtown section of town was referenced on the cover of the Stephen King novel, Needful Things. The Dexter Regional Airport has a lighted and paved 3,000-foot runway waiting for your arrival.
Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are just over an hour away, while Bangor is thirty-five minutes from Dexter.
