Maine Jewish Summer Camp Exhibit in Portland, Maine

Camp Modin sits on Salmon Lake in the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine

Since 1922 sleep-away camps have provided a waterfront haven for Jewish children in the Maine Lakes and Mountains regions.

Remember your own summer camp experience? Early morning dips in the chilly water, panicked cabin clean-ups before inspection, shower lines, long, exhausting hikes, popsicle stick cabins and macaroni pictures,  s’mores and songs around the campfire, Red Rover and Capture the Flag, whispered secrets after lights out?
You may have chanted the Hebrew blessing before meals, spent Friday nights at sunset walking to the outdoor synagogue or learned about Israeli culture.
And remember that feeling of independence? Chances are you probably can still make a bed with hospital corners, tie a clove-hitch knot, and gather kindling to start a campfire.
Your camp experience probably played a huge part in you becoming the person you are today. You grew independently, at an age-appropriate pace, and learned to live without Mom or Dad hovering nearby.
In honor of all those memories, the Maine Jewish Museum is hosting the Maine Jewish Summer Camp Exhibit at 267 Congress Street in Portland. The show will open on Thursday, June 21 at 7 p.m.
The exhibit, which includes photographs and camp memorabilia, will be on display throughout the summer. Thirty-seven Jewish summer camps, from the oldest, Camp Modin in the Belgrade Lakes Region, to the newest, Camp Micah in the Sebago Lakes Region, will be featured. Some of the other camps in the spotlight include Accomac, Arden, Cobbossee, Echo Lake, Kennebec, Naomi, Tripp Lake, Takajo, Walden and Wigwam.
Don’t miss this opportunity to travel down memory lane and be transported back to the lakefront cabin or tent you spent your summers in from ages nine to fifteen. This exhibit will help you  cherish those moments all over again.
