Once called Pleasant Pond, Clary Lake encompasses 674 acres. The lake is three miles long and has a 10.9 mile perimeter. The maximum depth is 22 feet, with a mean depth of 14 feet. The water quality is below average.
Whitefield consists of three villages including Kings Mills, North Whitefield, and Coopers Mills. In the late 1700s-early 1800s, all were important mill sites along the Sheepscot River. Clary Lake provides the center for the North Whitefield village. At one time there were four mills at this site. The lake is split between Whitefield and Jefferson, a small town located at the head of Damariscotta Lake.
On Clary Lake, you’ll want to ski, tube and jetski during the day. Plan to enjoy the rest of the evening fishing and swimming or trolling around the lake.
The principal fisheries are smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel. The structure is just right on Clary Lake, with marshy areas at both ends and lots of coves. A state-maintained boat launch is located on Route 218.
Nearby activities include the horseback riding stables at Hundred Acre Woods, home of the Clary Lake Pony Club, the Sheepscot Links Golf Course and Hidden Valley Nature Center. Also located in Whitefield is the Brower Observatory built by the Central Maine Astronomical Society.
The lake is centrally located 15 minutes from Augusta and Damariscotta. In Augusta, you’ll find all the amenities you need, including big box stores, grocery stores, banks, movie theaters, an airport and museums. The more intimate town of Damariscotta offers small cafes and restaurants, galleries and lots of antiques.
And not far away you can enjoy coastal activities including beaches, lighthouses, boat tours, sea kayaking, galleries, charming shops, antiques, restaurants, and of course, lobster.
