Windham is situated along the shore of Maine’s second largest lake, Sebago Lake. The Indian name, “Sebago,” means “Great Stretch of Water.” This water stretches eight miles wide and twelve miles long. At its deepest point, the water depth is 316 feet. The public boat launch on Lowell Farm Road in Falmouth is for hand-carried canoes and kayaks only. Motor boat traffic is low. Fed by springs and streams, including MacIntosh Brook at the northern end, Highland Lake encompasses 623 acres. The maximum depth is 67 feet, with an average depth of 22 feet.

Highly valued by seasonal and year-round lakefront residents for family time and fishing is Little Sebago Lake. The serpentine shoreline is fun to explore via canoe, kayak, paddleboat, or powerboat. Little Sebago consists of three distinct basins, northern, middle and southern. Numerous tributaries lead into the lake. There are many coves, islands and peninsulas to boat around. The lake covers 1,898 acres and is about 5 ½ miles in length. Its deepest spot is 52 feet, just southwest of Horse Island. There are two narrows: Upper and Lower Narrows.

The more popular trails are Chaffin Pond, the Mountain Division Trail, Lowell Preserve and Black Brook Trails. Check at the trailhead kiosks to see what type of activities are allowed.The Windham Historical Society, housed in the historic first town house, presents monthly programs. A couple of places of interest include their library and grocery, as well as the Pleasant River Grange and the birthplace of John A. Andrews, Governor of Massachusetts during the Civil War.Babb’s Bridge spans the Presumpscot River in South Windham. Located off River Road, the original bridge was burned by vandals in 1973, but an exact replica of the one span Queenspost truss was erected and opened to traffic in 1976.
