Goose Pond in Shapleigh, Maine is located two hours north of Boston, 1 hour from Portland, Portsmouth and North Conway and only 45 minutes from the Atlantic Coast.
The water is deep and cool on this 39-acre, spring-fed pond. In the 1800s, a small canal was dug connecting Square Pond to Goose Pond. A gate, controlled by the town of Sanford, regulates the water flow from Square Pond to Goose.
In a similar way, Goose Pond is connected to Mousam Lake via a small channel, making it easy to cross over to Mousam in your boat. You can enjoy the peace and quiet of Goose Pond, yet have easy accessibility to the bigger lake.Because of its close proximity, Goose Pond is part of the Mousam Lake Region Association. The MLRA is “organized for the purpose of preserving and protecting the natural character of Mousam Lake, Goose Pond and its surroundings.”
The waters are also protected by the Acton-Shapleigh Youth Conservation Corps, which is “committed to protecting the waters of Goose Pond, Loon Pond, Mousam Lake and Square Pond . . . the ASYCC provides education, community outreach, technical assistance, courtesy boat inspection and installation of conservation projects for landowners, business owners and municipalities.”
