Find Your True Escape in the Striking Setting of Sunday River Ski Area in Newry, Maine

Sunday River Ski Area in Newry, Maine
Own lakefront property in the striking setting of Sunday River Ski Area in Newry, Maine, and you’ll find your true vacation escape. Winter enthusiasts will enjoy all that the ski area has to offer, but year round you can still heed the call to come outside here.
The impetus for Sunday River Ski Area came from a T-bar erected in 1947 on a small hill on Vernon Street in Bethel. It was another ten years before a group climbed Locke Mountain and figured out where to build the first lift and trails in Newry. On December 19, 1959, the Sunday River Skiway officially opened.
During the 1960s more T-bars and trails, plus a beginner’s area were added. The Viking Village residential area was established in the mid-60s and the first lot sold for $300.
Other mountains were using snowmaking, but in 1970 Sunday River was the first resort in Maine to use a system to cover the entire mountain. Also of note in the ‘70s, after the Shelburne Company, which owned Killington, purchased the controlling interest of Sunday River, they sent 23 year-old Les Otten to work as assistant manager. The following year, Les became the general manager and continued to grow the mountain. In 1980 he purchased Sunday River from the Shelburne Company and eventually went on to form the American Ski Company, which he resigned from in 2007.
During Les’ tenure, Maine Handicapped skiing was established, the ski area expanded to include eight peaks and White Heat was added as the longest and steepest trail in the East. New chairlifts, resort and conference centers and a terrain park were among his accomplishments.
Eight peaks stretching over three miles wide from east to west and covering 667 acres with 132 trails have made Sunday River one of the largest ski resorts in the Northeast. Each of the eight mountains offers something different. You’ll find terrain for all abilities, ranging from gentle cruisers to challenging double diamonds. And the descent varies from peak to peak: White Cap, 1,630 feet; Locke Mountain, 1,460 feet; Barker Mountain, 1,400 feet; Spruce Peak, 1,500 feet; North Peak, 1,000 feet; South Ridge, 500 feet; Aurora Peak, 1,100 feet, Oz, 1,100 feet and Jordan Bowl, 1,490 feet.
With the Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed Sunday River Golf Club and the exhilarating Zip Line Tours that offer beautiful views, Sunday River is a year-round destination. Today Sunday River is owned by the Boyne Resorts-CNL partnership. Over fifty years have come and gone, but the natural beauty, mountain environment and small town living in the Newry/Bethel area continues to provide a true escape.
