Incorporated in March of 1785, Shapleigh was named for Major Nicholas Shapleigh, who co-owned a trading house enterprise in the area. Like many small towns in Maine, the waterways provided power for mills and small villages grew up around these sites. Thus, Shapleigh consists of four principal settlements: Shapleigh Corner, Emery Mills, Ross Corner and North Shapleigh.Historically, this was a farming community. Today, hundreds of acres are still dedicated to this farming heritage.
For those of you who enjoy an exploration of the natural world, Shapleigh has much to offer from conserved lands to turtle preserves. The Three Rivers Land Trust, which has a mission to preserve and protect forever the valued natural resources of several York County towns including Shapleigh, owns acres and acres of land in the area.
The Shapleigh Barrows, located along Route 11, covers 1,170 acres and lies in part within the Vernon Walker Wildlife Management Area. It’s the location of a pitch pine/scrub oak forest and is home to Blanding and Wood turtles, as well as over 300 varieties of moths and butterflies including at least 6 state-rare species.
Paddle your canoe or kayak out on Upper Goose Pond and explore the Turtle Reserve. I’m guarantee you’ll be rewarded for your efforts.
Though Shapleigh is a bedroom community for Sanford and Portland, it’s small stores such as the One Earth Natural Food Store on Route 109 that help make this a desirable place to live. Owned and operated by the mother-daughter team of Diane and Alissa Laitres, they will do their best to meet your needs.
From summer swimming, fishing and boating to winter snowmobiling with the Squash Hollow Sno Goers and ice fishing tournaments on the lakes and ponds, Shapleigh is a wonderful place to get away from it all, even though it’s only a matter of minutes from Kittery, York and Kennebunkport and 85 miles from Boston.
Check out the lakefront property in this easily accessible place that is an escape from the city and offers the perfect setting for your vacation getaways or an entire summer of lakeside relaxation. Oh, and did I mention the fishing?
