8.16-8.18, Thursday-Saturday, 7pm/Thurs.-Sat, 2pm/Sat, “Maine State Ballet presents ‘Hansel and Gretel’,” based on the classic German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, with a score gleaned from the opera of the same name by 19th century composer Engelbert Humperdinck, “Hansel and Gretel” tells the story of a poor woodcutter’s children who become lost in the woods. As night falls, guardian angels watch over them and keep them safe. In the morning, they stumble upon a house made of gingerbread, candy, and other delicious treats. Part ghost story and part psychological thriller, this classic tale concerns a young unsuspecting governess hired by a wealthy recluse to look after his orphaned niece and nephew – two seemingly innocent children who soon reveal terrifying secrets. 8.17-8.18, Friday-Saturday, 4pm, “Camp Maine: A Night on the Town,” Celebration Barn Theater teams up with Norway Downtown to create a fun, theatrical escapade unlike anything you’ve seen before! In A Night on the Town, a posthumous bequeath from legendary local sends the audience on a scavenger hunt along Norway’s Main Street to piece together a story that reveals a hidden treasure in the community. Celebration Barn Theater is co-producing this original performance with Interactive PlayLab, a company at the vanguard of interactive performance, in which the “audience” become co-creators of a fictional narrative. 8.18, Saturday, 7pm, “Evening Star Party,” see the wonders of the night sky first hand with Northern Stars Planetarium & Southern Maine Astronomers! Rotate through different stations & activities to find out about the stars & planets in the skies above & their impact on wildlife. There will be telescopes to use, as well as larger scopes that party leaders will keep on whatever mysterious objects are overhead. 8.18, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Ameranouche,” the award winning Ameranouche(pronounced uh-Mare-uh-noosh) plays a passionate style of music they call “Gypsy Flamenco Swing.” They are veterans of the Newport Jazz Festival, Djangofest Northwest, Muzikfest Bethlehem, PA and the National Press Club. The name dips derived from two words:American and Manouche, the gypsy tribe of guitarist Django Reinhardt. The rip-roaring ensemble is a super force of hot acoustic Gypsy inspired music mixing Flamenco, Bebop and Jazz swing influences. Played on traditional French jazz guitars, the music is rhythmic, vigorous, and elegant. Whether they’re playing a musette waltz from 1930 or an Andalusian inspired original tune.
