Aug. 9, Thursday, 4-10pm, “Stars Over Surry,” featured by Surry Conservation Commission in collaboration with Blue Hill Heritage Trust, planetarium shows will be held at 4 and 5:15 p.m. at the school, North Bend Road. Bring your own picnic, lawn chair or blanket and a flashlight at 6 p.m. in Surry Forest. Lynn Havsall will lead a “Night Sky” chat by the fire with marshmallows at 7 p.m.; and John Meader will lead “Guided Night Sky Tour with Stories” at 8:15 p.m, free, Surry Forest, Toddy Pond Road, Surry and Surry Elementary School, 754 N Bend Road, Surry. Aug. 9, Thursday, 6:30pm, “The Crown Vics,” The Crown Vics are America’s favorite rock’n’roll dance band. They have been described as “hard-twang”, “slacker swing” and “post-punk honky tonk”, and provide a high-octane mix of vintage rock, country, and ska, that will fire up any dance floor or concert stage! Bring your blankets and chairs and join us at the Riverfront Park for an evening of great music. Remember, Riverfront Park is a tobacco free zone. Aug. 9, Thursday, 7:30pm, “Susan Ferre Organ Concert,” performing music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Ludwig Krebs, Josef Rheinberger, Charles Tournemire and Fanny Mendelssohn on Maine’s largest 19th-century mechanical-action pipe organ, E. & G.G. Hook’s magnificent Opus 288. Susan Ferre has spent the last ten years directing a non-profit organization, Music in the Great North Woods, which sponsors, free of charge, classical concerts and organ scholarships in New Hampshire’s North Country. She serves St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Berlin, NH, as Organist and Director of Music, and has recently been elected Dean of the NH Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She has performed widely in Europe, Scandinavia, Brazil, Canada, and throughout the United States, donations appreciated, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor. FMI: hookopus288.net.
Aug. 11, Saturday, 9am, “Forest Bathing,” a form of forest meditation developed in Japan that helps people deepen their connection to nature and draw on their natural surroundings to nurture themselves and relieve stress, will be led by Lucy Quimby. Aug. 11, Saturday, 9am-5:30pm, “Public Supper and 8th Annual Car Show,” the eighth annual car show and auction will be held 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Road. A public baked bean and casserole supper will be held 4:30-5:30 p.m., and will include hot dogs, rolls and homemade pies in addition to the main courses, $7, $3/children, East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Road, Orrington. Aug. 11, Saturday, 11am/events begin, “Hampden Children’s Day,” this community fun day begins with a fun run and bicycle safety and decorating, followed by a parade at 11 am. Children’s activities are from 12-4 p.m. with a petting zoo, Flamin Raymin and Sizzling Suzan, horse and carriage rides, cake walk, pie eating contest, mad science activities, face painting, bounce houses, inflatable games and much more. Activities are free, and you can cool off in the misting tent. Hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, doughboys and tacos are available with strawberry shortcake, ice cream, ice cones, cotton candy, popcorn and homemade lemonade for an extra treat. Aug. 12, Sunday, 3pm, “Concert at Ecotat Gardens,” Six Basin Street, the all women Dixieland band, will perform. They have been playing together since the winter of 1991 and is still going strong today! With a diverse group of members from all age ranges and backgrounds.
