May 18, Friday, 6pm, “The Anderson Trio plays Ellington,” coming off their Drama Desk nominated show Le Jazz Hot, virtuoso saxophonists and clarinetists Peter and Will Anderson return to Bay Chamber to explore the musical context and hits of big band legend Duke Ellington. Prepare to dive into the sultry sounds of Kansas City, New Orleans, and Harlem that shaped the sound of American Music for generations to come. May 19, Saturday, 10am, “’Ditch the City and Go Country’ Book Signing,” Come meet Alissa Hessler, local author of “Ditch the City and Go Country: How to Master the Art of Rural Life From a Former City Dweller.” Alissa has been co-teaching photography classes across the country with her husband Jacob Hessler and consulting working photographers wanting to develop a wider-audience for their work. In addition, Alissa co-operates Hessler Creative, a branding and photography agency and shoots for various publications, including Modern Farmer, Bon Appétit, The Guardian and Good Housekeeping. For the last three years she has been shooting and interviewing ex-urbanites across North America for her project, Urban Exodus. May 19 and 20, Saturday and Sunday, 7:30pm/Sat, 4pm/Sun, “Women in Harmony present 25th Anniversary Concert-Songs of Resistance,” Portland’s 60-voice feminist community chorus, celebrates its 25th anniversary season with a concert called “Songs of Resistance.” The program features the premiere of a commissioned piece, Look Out, by noted choral composer Joan Szymko; it is a setting of a poem of the same name by the poet Wendell Berry. The program also highlights a variety of civil rights and protest songs, including several from the Justice Choir Songbook—an outgrowth of the Women’s March on Washington in 2017.
