Apr. 5, Thursday, 6:30pm, “Author Reading with Gary Rainford,” Author of two poetry collections, Gary Rainford lives on Swan’s Island, Maine, year-round with his wife and daughter. Maine Today Magazine showcased Gary’s newest book, Liner Notes, in the column, “Face the Music.” We Are Here, Gary’s new suite of poems, was an honorable mention selected by Betsy Sholl for The Gabriel Zimpritch Memorial Poetry Prize. Down East magazine calls Gary a Maine poet at the top of his game. A tireless advocate for poetry Gary was a guest on WERU’s On the Wing, Poet to Poet, a Somerville Community Access TV show, Poetry by the Bay on WBFY, and Good Morning, Belfast, which celebrates the Good Life in Belfast & Waldo County. Apr. 6, Friday, 7pm, “Mayan Archaeoastronomy: Observers of the Universe,” The night is an eye, both dark and bright! It forces us to look up and ask ourselves questions about our place in the Cosmos, our origins, and what is beyond the horizon. Using spectacular visuals and stunning sound, audiences tour six ancient Mayan temples: San Gervasio, Chichen Itzá, Uxmal, Edzna, Palenque, and Bonampak. Along the way they dive into Mayan knowledge of the sky exploring the movement of the Sun, the Moon and Venus. Find Balam the Jaguar constellation and explore how the Mayan’s created a calendar more accurate than the one we use in modern times. Apr. 6, Friday, 7:30pm, “Almost, Maine,” a play by John Cariani, comprising nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical almost-town called Almost, Maine. There are eleven short scenes: the Prologue (which continues in the Interlogue and Epilogue), Her Heart, Sad and Glad, This Hurts, Getting It Back, They Fell, Where It Went, Story of Hope, and Seeing the Thing. Apr. 7, Saturday, 7pm, “David Mallet: An Evening of Song and Story,” David will perform songs with his band and talk about the inspiration for his many songs about Maine. After his performance, he will be interviewed onstage by Rob Caldwell, news anchor and 207 co-host for WCSH and WLBZ. The event is the second in a series called “Framing Maine: Conversations with Storytellers and Imagemakers from the Pine Tree State.” The series features prominent Mainers whose work has been influential in creating the popular image of Maine.
