Mar. 15, Thursday, 6pm, “AMC Potluck and Presentation: Atlantic Canada,” our Closest Neighbor and its Exceptional Natural Beauty. Priscilla Anson is a world traveler whose most recent journey took her through the four provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. Boondocking most nights with no planned itinerary, Priscilla experienced through hiking and wanderlust-filled days the expansiveness, natural beauty, and cultural warmth of this unique region. Join us as she shares photos, narrative, and anecdotes that will bring to life this beautiful region, with a focus on Newfoundland. Mar. 15-18, Thursday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Thurs.-Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Radium Girls,” in 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall devastatingly ill. When the factory owners refused to act to either protect their workers or compensate them for their increasing medical expenses, the women decided to fight back. Inspired by a true story, RADIUM GIRLS traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Mar. 18, Sunday, 2:30pm, “The Midcoast Symphony Orchestra, ‘Celebration Pops,” under guest conductor Yoichi Udagawa “Celebration Pops” is the most light-hearted Series of the year and may be the best suited in our concert year for those new to orchestral performance. The program includes Aaron Copland’s Hoedown, Hooray for Hollywood by John Williams, Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, A Tribute to Henry Mancini, Cavalliera Rusticana by Mascagni, and several other popular pieces and beloved melodies. Mar. 20, Tuesday, 1pm, “Met Opera Encore: Rossini’s Semiramide,” this masterpiece of dazzling vocal fireworks makes a rare Met appearance-its first in nearly 25 years, with Maurizio Benini on the podium. The all-star bel canto cast features Angela Meade in the title role of the murderous Queen of Babylon, who squares off in breathtaking duets with Arsace, a trouser role sung by Elizabeth DeShong, Javier Camarena, Ildar Abdrazakov, and Ryan Speedo Green complete the stellar cast.
