Mar. 8-12, Thursday-Monday, 7:30pm/Thurs, Fri, and Mon, 5pm/Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches,” theater professor Tim Dugan directs a play considered one of 20th-century America’s most important and thrilling works for the stage, Tony Kushner’s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning play explores sexuality, politics, religion, power and justice at the height of the AIDS epidemic, free but tickets required, $5 donations gratefully accepted, Schaeffer Theatre, Bates College, 329 College St, Lewiston. Mar. 9, Friday, 6-10pm, “Music Event-The Blues Prophets,” Maine’s premier legendary blues band, The Outerspace Band, an eclectic group of musicians touching upon many styles and well written original offerings team up with Andrea Re’ renown Maine and national singer percussionist for a night of fun creativity and abandoned dancing, in years past, these bands and musicians appeared together at various bottle clubs, outdoor concerts and bars, always creating a special excitement wherever they played, $16 – $20, T & B’s Outback Tavern, 6 Jefferson St., Waterville. Mar. 9, Friday, 7:30pm, “Central Maine Comedy Invitational,” come and hear some local comedians share their best stuff. This second annual friendly competition offers comedians a chance to do 5 to 10 minutes of original stand-up comedy on the Franco Center stage. Mar. 10, Saturday, 4pm, “UUCC Concert with James Johnson: Original Compositions and Jazz Standards,” James Johnson, composer and percussionist, received his MFA at the California Institute of the Arts and performs chamber, jazz and world music. He has studied under great artists such as Alexander LePak, Richie LePore, John Bergamo, Ed Saindon, David Johnson, Dave Samuels, Bobbie Bradford, Tony Miceli and a master class with Gary Burton. Johnson composed a piece for solo vibraphone, “Lullaby for Judy” and a small band/ensemble, “The Fog Meets the Storm,” which will soon be published. Last year, his percussion ensemble piece, “In the Night,” was premiered by the Southern Utah University Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dr. Lynn Vartan. He directs the music department at Erskine Academy in South, China, Maine, where he explores all styles of music and ensembles with the students. Johnson composes and arranges for many of his ensembles. He lives in Hallowell with his wife, Bridget Convey. Mar. 10, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Bates College Spring Orchestra Concert,” Led by Hiroya Miura, the orchestra showcases winners of this year’s Bates Orchestra Concerto Competition: Christine Cho, Elliot Chun and Nick White, White is the soloist for Carl Maria von Weber’s Concertino for Clarinet in E-flat major (Op. 26), Chun and Cho take the spotlight in Bach’s Concerto for 2 Violins in D minor (BWV 1043) also: Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor (“From the New World”), Op. 95, free but tickets required, Olin Concert Hall, Bates College, 75 Russell St., Lewiston. Mar. 11, Sunday, 2pm, “Maine-ly Harmony and Back Bay Four,” Maine-ly Harmony is a lively organization of women of all ages and from all over central Maine. Members come together to blend their voices in the beautiful a cappella barbershop harmony of singing, a style of four-part unaccompanied singing. The Back Bay Four, a men’s Championship Barbershop Quartet, are members of the Portland Downeasters Chorus. In addition to other venues around the state, performers from Maine-ly Harmony and the Back Bay Four often sing for residents of retirement homes, veterans homes, and nursing homes.
