Mar. 2, Friday, 7pm, “Maine Event Comedy presents Brian Plumb,” Plumb’s confrontational style has made him a favorite throughout New England and beyond. He’s a regular at Comix at Mohegan Sun and will perform the upcoming Mutiny Radio Comedy Festival in San Francisco. Plumb was a semi-finalist at the Last Comix Standing contest at Foxwoods Casino and has played the Dallas Comedy Festival, Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, and NYC’s Greenwich Village Comedy Club. Simpson, a mainstay of the Portland scene, was recently selected for Michigan’s LaughFest, a 10-day festival featuring stand-up, improv, and film. She’s performed at multiple venues in New York City and zigzags across New England finding stages everywhere from ImprovBoston to New Hampshire’s Shaskeen Pub, to some deserted pizza place in a Vermont ski town. Despite his sleepy demeanor, McGurk is one of Boston’s fastest rising stars. He’s a regular at the Comedy Studio, Laugh Boston, and Giggles Comedy Club.Griffith, a relative newcomer to stand-up, is a familiar face in the Maine scene and was recently featured at Empire in Portland. Mar. 2, Friday, 7:30pm, “Scott Ainslie,” presented by Concerts for a Cause, Scott Ainslie is a masterful historian, storyteller, and musician who explores the African and European roots of American music and culture. He has studied with elder musicians on both sides of the color line – in the Old-Time Southern Appalachian fiddle and banjo traditions, as well as Black Gospel and Blues. He plays this music with affection, authority, and power. Armed with a variety of instruments – vintage guitars, a fretless gourd banjo, a one-string, homemade “diddley bow” (aka cigar box guitar) and personal anecdotes of his encounters with senior musicians across the South – Ainslie brings the history, roots music, and sounds of America alive. Mar. 3, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble,” music from the richly varied contemporary and historic cultural traditions of the Middle East, including Ottoman Turkish classical compositions, rural Turkish folk and devotional songs, Arabic classical and folk music, and dance music from Armenian and Turkish immigrant diasporas. This performance will include Mal Barsamian, a multi-instrumentalist considered the finest Middle Eastern clarinetist in the United States today. The concert is free of charge. Mar. 4, Sunday, 5-7:30pm, “Mt. Blue Music Boosters Annual Benefit Cabaret,” The event is hosted by The Calzolaio Pasta Company in Wilton. The restaurant provides the food, space and wait staff for this wonderful fund raiser. Students, music educators and local musicians come together to provide a full two hours of wonderful entertainment. The proceeds from this fund raiser help the Music Boosters provide up to $3,000 in summer scholarships for Music Camps and private lessons and help with much needed instrument repairs and purchases. This year, Mt. Blue Ensembles, Profectus vocals, Franklin County Fiddlers, Jazz Ensemble and local-duo Crooked Bill will keep the music flowing. The meal is a full-course Italian buffet with dessert.
