Feb. 16-18, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Fri.-Sat, 2pm/Sat. and Sun, “When Radio Was King,” Before there was Netflix, Hulu and cable TV, families would crowd around the radio to listen to their favorite shows. The Monmouth Community Players invites audiences to take a trip into the past and experience a live radio show in the second annual production “When Radio Was King.” This production is being directed by Linda Duarte, of Lewiston, with music direction by Bob Gilbert, and Cindy Dunham, of Winthrop, filling the role of producer. The audience can expect to see an authentic old-time radio show, complete with old vaudeville comedy routines, sketches and commercials including sound effects — just like they would experience if they were in the audience of a real radio program. Feb. 16, Friday, 8pm, “Shemekia Copeland,” whether she’s belting out a raucous blues-rocker, ring up a blistering soul-shouter, bringing the spirit to a gospel-fueled R&B rave-up or digging down into a subtle, country-tinged balled, Shemekia Copeland sounds like no one else, $20-$30, Waterville Opera House, 93 Main Street, Waterville. Feb. 17, Saturday, 6am-4pm, “Wilton Fish and Game 4th Annual Michael J. Rowe Memorial Ice Fishing Derby,” the event coincides with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s Free Fishing Weekend. Even people who have never gone ice fishing are encouraged to attend. A free ice-fishing clinic for all ages will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All bait and equipment will be provided. Registration for the event is $5. People can register from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. the day of the event at the Wilson Lake boat launch area. The first 50 youth to come to the registration shack with a ticket on the day of the event will get a free grab bag full of valuable items. Many door prizes will be given away at the event, including a 10-inch Jiffy Auger, a toboggan, and gift certificates from area businesses. All youth 15 and under participating in the event will be entered to win a lifetime fishing license. Adult prizes include a two-man ice shelter, a jet sled with hitch and cover, Loring pack basket with liner Prizes will be awarded in three adult categories: Brook Trout, Togue and Salmon. Youth prizes include a boxed set of Max-traps for the heaviest fish. Other categories will get a package that includes a pack basket, bait net, a Max-trap and two Narrow Gauge Cinema movie tickets. Prizes will be awarded in six youth categories: Brook Trout, Togue, Pickerel, Salmon, Bass, Yellow Perch and White Perch. There will be a special prize for smallest fish. All prizes will be announced and awarded beginning at 4 p.m. Food concessions will include fresh cut French fries, grilled hot dogs and bottled water. Feb. 17, Saturday, 1pm, “National Theatre Live: Follies,” New York, 1971. There’s a party on the stage of the Weismann Theatre. Tomorrow the iconic building will be demolished. Thirty years after their final performance, the Follies girls gather to have a few drinks, sing a few songs and lie about themselves. Feb. 18, Sunday, 2:30pm, “The Other William Morris,” Bill Berlinghoff, scholar, teacher, and collector, will speak on “The Other William Morris”, a look into early American show business. In the early 20th century, the “other” William Morris was the foremost theatrical agent in the world. Before television, radio, “talkies”, and the Internet, when entertainment was live on a stage, Morris ran the Hollywood agency that still bears his name. He was the greatest agent in vaudeville, signing Al Jolson, Charlie Chaplin, the Marx brothers, and Mae West. He was loved by the likes of Sir Harry Lauder and Sophie Tucker, and his legacy has continued to this day. The presentation, the second in series of lectures sponsored by the Shiretown Bookers, will include rare memorabilia from the heyday of live variety entertainment, free, North Dining Hall, Olsen Student Center, UMF, Farmington. Feb. 21, Wednesday, 6:30pm, “Maeghan Maloney and the Case of the North Pond Hermit,” join us for a special presentation by Maegan Maloney, the DA who worked on the North Pond Hermit case. She’ll be discussing her experience and then opening up for a question and answer period. For anyone who has read the enormously popular “The Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit,” by Michael Finkel or for anyone who has simply been curious about the case and wants to know more, this will be a truly engaging event, free, Lithgow Public Library, 45 Winthrop Street, Augusta.
