A daring phone call is made and a reconciliation is hastily agreed to. Emotions rise when the apex of their differences come to a head. An uplifting experience in a small and intimate setting. This month features Rachael Kilgour. Rachael is a Minnesota-born, Boston-based songwriter and performing artist whose sincere lyric-driven work bravely walks the line between personal and political. Feb. 9-11, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 2:30pm/Sun, “Once On This Island,” a spirited musical presented by the drama department of Gorham High School. There are 42 students performing this story of star crossed lovers from two sides of the island. There is music and dance and a classic story. Feb. 10, Saturday, 10am-3:30pm, “Chinese New Year Celebration for the Year of the Dog,” Celebrate the Year of the Dog with the Chinese and American Friendship Association of Maine (CAFAM). This is Maine’s oldest and largest Chinese New Year celebration. The students at CAFAM’s Chinese School will perform traditional Chinese dances from 11:00 am to noon. There will be a dragon dance at noon. Throughout the day there will be dog themed crafts available for children in the gym where there will also be lion dance performances and the ability to interact with the lion dance performers all day long. There will be delicious Chinese food available in the cafeteria. There will be tai chi and mahjongg lessons and participation. Chinese exchange students from Thornton Academy will perform traditional Chinese music and discuss their traditional Chinese instruments in the afternoon. There will be vendors selling China related books and Chinese teas. Representatives of USM’s Confucius Institute will be there doing calligraphy and explaining their organization’s activities in southern Maine. There will be several talks about various aspects of Chinese culture and current events. There’s something for everyone all day long. Feb, 11, Sunday, 5pm, “Winter Fever Reliever: Steel Drum Community Concert,” There’s no better way to break from a cold Maine winter than dancing to Soca and Calypso music! Featuring multiple steel drum bands including the Gorham Middle School Band, the Gorham High School Band, Planet Pan traveling from Blue Hill, Maine and Sister Steel a professional group based in Portland.
