“Ice Harvest on Mill Pond,” Newfield

Feb. 1, Thursday, 6pm, “Full Moon Walk on the Eastern Trail,” walks are 60-90 minutes with biologist & trustee Joe Yuhas, all ages welcome but flashlights and furry friends are not, meet at 6pm, free, Southern Maine Health Care, off West Cole Road, Biddeford. Feb. 2, Friday, 6pm, “First Night Sledding Party,” the grown-ups get the sledding hill all to themselves! Sleds provided, so just show up for the sledding fun on the Adams Street hill (in front of City Hall), followed by Dirigo after-party! Feb. 3, Saturday, all day events, “Biddeford Winterfest,” events include sledding, snow golf & snowshoeing, dog sled rides, fat bicycle rides, ice carving, broomball exhibition, and more! Also Biddeford WinterFest’s verison of fire and ice. Gather in the snow, under the warmth of heat lamps, with the live music of BillyBilly, and grab a cup of cold Banded Horn Beer flowing down the ice luge, tickets are $25 and include your first beer/non-alcoholic beverage and a Cowbell Burger Bar slider, Biddeford City Square, Biddeford. Feb. 3 & 4, Saturday and Sunday, 9am-3pm, “Bookbinding Class at Newfield,” 12 hours class, work with a professional book artist, conservator, archivist, and librarian Anastasia Weigle and learn to build two classic bindings. Day One: Learn to build a classic German Case Bradel Binding with signature stitches. This beautiful book is suitable for a slim collection of poems. Day Two: Learn to build a drum-leaf binding, a book specifically designed for artists, printer, and photographers. This book opens up completely flat without a break in the gutter allowing you to display across two pages. This initiated will review and refine skills to gain confidence in one of the standard bookbinding constructions. Class limited to 6, register in advance, $150/tuition, materials and tools provided. Feb. 4, Sunday, 10am-3pm, “Ice Harvest on the Mill Pond, Newfield,” a hands-on participatory event that re-enacts an important chapter in our Maine and American heritage. Using antique ice tools we will cut cakes of ice from a pond and load them onto a sled drawn by draft horses. We will transport to the cellar of the main barn at the museum, and use the ice for a hands-on activity for kids and visitors this season. There will draft horse and bobsled rides, blacksmithing, refreshments, slight cost for some activities, free/admission, Curran Homestead Village, 70 Elm Street, Newfield.
