Jan. 12, Friday, 7pm, “Ty Gagne-Trouble in the Presidentials: What a Mountaineering Accident Can Teach Us About Decision Making & Managing Risk,” Although strikingly beautiful, Mount Washington and the surrounding Presidential Range hold the dubious distinction of having “the world’s worst weather.” The Presidential Range is also world-renowned for the challenging terrain it provides for alpinists, and as such, has been the scene of hundreds of mountaineering accidents over the years. Jan. 13, Saturday 3pm, “Zenith Ensemble Debut Concerts-Durufle Requiem & Byrd Mass for Five Voices,” Zenith Ensemble presents its debut concerts in Portland and Brunswick this January. Northern New England-based, the new professional vocal ensemble is made up of some of the finest musicians in the country. Jan. 13, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Novel Jazz,” a UUCB Concert for a Cause, will feature the music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn – civil rights activists, friends and favorite musicians of Martin Luther King, Jr – along with interesting stories about their relationship with Dr. King, their experiences with racism and homophobia, and how this affected their music and forged their promotion of civil rights. The musicians of “Novel Jazz,” who hail from all over Maine, have been performing straight-ahead jazz around Maine and New England for over three decades. Jan. 14, Sunday, 2:30pm, “Midcoast Symphony Orchestra Concert ‘Orchestra on Display’,” In “The Orchestra on Display,” different performers and sections of the ensemble featured separately. This program opens with the Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare for brass, followed by Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante, for orchestra and solo violin, cello, oboe, and bassoon. Anton Webern’s Langsamer Satz for strings brings us to the 20th century with lyricism and modern tonalities. Jan. 17, Wednesday, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., “Music@Noon – Solera String Quartet with pianist Josu de Solaun,” Tricia Park and Miki-Sophia Cloud, violins; Molly Carr, viola; and Andrew Janss, cello, of the Solera String Quartet, have performed at Carnegie Hall, the Royal Festival Hall in London, Orchard Hall in Tokyo, The Kennedy Center, and Lincoln Center and in prestigious festivals including Marlboro, Music@Menlo and Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, as a First Prize winner of the George Enescu International Piano Competition and the First European Union Piano Competition, Spanish pianist Josu De Solaun has performed in distinguished concert series throughout the world, their Music@Noon program offers an opportunity to hear Beethoven’s String Quartet in F Minor, Opus 95 and George Enescu’s Piano Quintet in A Minor, Opus 29, $30, Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland.
