Sept. 21, Thursday, 7pm, “A Cage for John Sawyer: The Poor of Otisfield, Maine,” the speaker will be Jean Hankins, who will take another look at the town’s poor, a subject she first tackled shortly after moving to Otisfield in 1993. Jean will first read an article she published in 1996, titled “A Cage for John Sawyer: The Poor of Otisfield, Maine.” This paper discusses not just why the town built a cage for Sawyer but also why and how they supported the less fortunate citizens in the period before the Civil War, free, Old Town House, 53 Bell Hill Road, Otisfield. Sept. 22, Friday, 8pm, “Erica Brown and the Bluegrass Connection,” fiddle prodigy Erica was competing at seven, touring at nine and recording at fifteen, when she made her SRT debut with the Old Time Radio Gang. Now her own five piece Bluegrass Band is enjoying great popularity and returns for their annual Bluegrass/Country/Folk hoedown! With Matt Shipman on guitar and vocals, Ken Taylor on bass, Steve Roy on Mandolin and vocals, and Read McNamara on Banjo, Erica was a recipient of a 2006 Maine Arts Commission Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Award and was recognized as a Master Artist by the Maine Arts Commission that same year. Her talent for combining the precision of classical music with the spontaneity of country and bluegrass fiddle makes for a fun-filled performance every time she plays.
