Sept. 7-8, Thursday-Friday, 7:30pm, “Last Train to Nibroc,” in December 1940, an eastbound cross-country train carries the bodies of the great American writers Nathanael West and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Elsewhere on the train, a chance encounter brings together a charming young discharged flyer, Raleigh, and shy May, a young woman who has been jilted by her soldier fiancé. As their paths continue to cross over the years, an unexpected bond blossoms. A funny, touching portrait of two people searching for happiness. Tickets are not required for this performance. Sept. 8, Friday, 6pm, “Full Moon Beer Dinner,” celebrate September’s full moon–a Harvest Moon–with a scenic lift ride to Sunday River Resort’s mid-mountain Peak Lodge for a Full Moon Beer Dinner during the Maine Brew Fest. Beer enthusiasts can expect a six-pint, four-course meal, complete with live music. Enjoy a cold one on the outdoor patio prior to dinner, a scrumptious four-course seasonal menu paired with more beers during dinner, then take in the stunning views of the Sunday River Valley lit by the full moon overhead as your ride the Chondola lift back down to South Ridge. The cocktail reception is at 6:30PM, and dinner is served at 7:00PM. All Full Moon Dinners at Sunday River Resort include a round-trip scenic lift ticket and entry into the dinner and live entertainment. Tickets to the Full Moon Beer Dinner are $59 per adult (ages 21 and older) when purchased separately from the Maine Brew Fest, or $89 when purchased as part of the Brewmaster’s ticket which includes access to the Full Moon Beer Dinner and Maine Brew Fest (plus early admission to the Maine Brew Fest by one hour). All Brew Fest event tickets go on sale starting Monday, May 29 (800-543-2754). Sept. 8, Friday, 8pm, “Spencer Albee,” Portland based and nationally acclaimed singer, songwriter and producer. Since 1995, he has toured internationally, signed multiple record deals and worked with artists ranging from David Bowie to De La Soul with his bands AS FAT AS, Spencer and the School Spirit Mafia, Space versus Speed and Rustic Overtones. Today he can be found playing in support of his 20th studio album “Relentlessly Yours,” and curating events like his annual “Beatles Night,” at the State Theatre in Portland. Rolling Stone Magazine calls Spencer both “the king of Portland, Maine’s secretly vibrant music scene” and “a 21st century master in the lost art of Beatlesesque hooks.” His six piece band includes bassist McCraie Hathaway, drummer/percussionist Andrew Hodgkins, guitarist/keyboardist Scott Mohler and vocalists Renee ‘Coolbrith and Blythe Armitage. Sept. 9, Saturday, 1pm, “Pie Social at Norlands,” step into the Past with a Pie Baking Contest, Pie Sale, Music on the Front Lawn with Phil Poirier and The Merry Plinksters Ukulele Group. Step back into the post-Civil War era against a backdrop of rolling fields and woodlands at the Washburn-Norlands Living History Center in Livermore. History and music will fill the autumn air along with the delicious aroma of fresh-baked homemade pies during this 7th annual fundraiser for Norlands. Whole pies will be for sale for $12 while slices are served up with real whipped cream for a donation. Sept. 13, Wednesday, 6pm, “Author Talk: Phyllis Chinlund,” author of “Looking Back from the Gate: A story of love, art and dementia.” In this book, she chronicles the cognitive decline of her beloved husband, photographer Ray Witlin, from the unique perspective of her two careers in geriatric social work and documentary film. “Looking Back from the Gate” is a vivid portrait of a marriage and a testament to the endurance of love in the face of devastating mental and physical decline. It is the story of how she and Ray found themselves on the bumpy road of Alzheimer’s disease without a map. Books will be on hand for purchase; signing will be available. Space is limited.
