Aug. 3, Thursday, 7:30pm, “Permelia Sears Organ Concert,” St. John’s Organ Society celebrates 25th Anniversary with summer organ concerts on Maine’s largest 19th-century tracker-action pipe organ, E. & G. G. Hook’s magnificent Opus 288. Sears is a graduate of Smith College and the Yale University School of Music with a Master of Music in Pipe Organ Performance. She was Co-Chairman of the Extant Organs Committee of the Organ Historical Society for many years and specializes in playing historical 19th century American tracker organs. She has performed on instruments across the Northeast, played on several Organ Historical Society Conventions, as well as in concerts with her husband and daughter. She is currently Director of Music at the First Congregational Church of Monson, MA, home of an 1892 three-manual Johnson and Son organ, donations appreciated, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor. Aug. 4, Friday, 5-8pm, “Downtown Bangor ArtWalk,” the Downtown Bangor Artwalk unites artists with downtown businesses to celebrate the diversity of arts in Bangor and is dedicated to the continued development of our community. Started in 2008 as an informal open-studio tour, the Artwalk brings hundreds of people to Bangor each year for evenings spent enjoying art, mingling with friends and dining in a wonderful array of restaurants, Downtown Bangor, Bangor. Aug. 5, Saturday, 10am, “Spiders –A-Silent World,” take a 1-hour trip into the world of spiders with your guide, Donne Sinderson. No experience necessary but curiosity required. Donne is an amateur arachnologist and Maine Master Naturalist, that started learning about spiders four years ago. She will introduce the different types of spiders, how their survival strategy differs and then head out to look for them in field, forest and around buildings. Aug. 8, Tuesday, 6pm, “Great Fire of 1911 Walking Tour,” in April, 1911 a spark in a riverside hay shed ignited a fire that devastated much of Bangor’s downtown and threatened many of her neighborhoods.
