Registration is open for the first ever Paddle Battle on Highland Lake!  This open paddleboard race will send its proceeds to the Lakes Environmental Association, a nonprofit organization based out of Bridgton that has a mission to preserve and restore Maine’s lakes, watersheds, and related natural resources.  Established after the first Earth Day in 1970, the LEA has been a leading figure in maintaining the health and beauty of Maine waters for nearly three generations, and hopes to continue doing so for “‘for your children and your children’s children.’”  From conducting pertinent research to battling milfoil to developing a computer mapping program to track the effects of land used on lakes, the LEA has been hard at work and deserves a “thank you” from those who enjoy the fruits of their labor.  And what better way to show them your support than by participating in a fun, competitive event on one of the very lakes that they strive to protect?
The inaugural Paddle Battle is scheduled for Saturday, July 1.  Racers will congregate at Terry A While Resort on Highland Lake in Bridgton at 8:00 and will hit the water by 9:30 in time for the elite 5k long board race followed by the 9:45 start of the 2k recreational short board race.  The course will loop around a portion of Highland Lake with the 5k course turning at Knoll’s Point and bypassing Oak Knoll, Penny and Fowler islands before finishing back on the beach at Terry A While.  The 2k course will loop back between Oak Knoll and Penny islands before commencing on the beach.
Participants are encouraged to fill in a pledge form to raise sponsorship.  For every $100 raised, the LEA will take a minute off your race time!
Don’t have a paddle board but want to participate?  Paddle board rentals are available through Bridgton Sportshaus and Sunsports+.
For more information, please visit the Lakes Environmental Association’s event webpage.  And remember, this is a fun event for a great cause.  So, when you’re out there paddling your way to victory, just remember that you’re doing a great service that will help protect the health of the Maine lakes that we all love to enjoy.
