June 17, Saturday, 8pm, “Joe K. Walsh and Sweet Loam,” Portland-based mandolinist Joe K. Walsh has been hailed by CBC-Newfoundland as “one of the best mandolinists of his generation” and by Nashville’s Music Row Magazine for his “lickety-split mandolin work.” Walsh has played with artists ranging from John Scofield to Bela Fleck to Emmylou Harris, and has performed everywhere from festivals, to Laundromats, to Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. An avid educator, Joe is a mandolin instructor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and teaches regularly at music camps and workshops throughout North America and Europe. After a number of years playing bluegrass with the popular Gibson Brothers group, Joe is currently expanding his musical horizons with new collaborations. Joining Joe in the band Sweet Loam are three brilliant, soulful players. Fiddler John Mailander is one of the preeminent young soloists in acoustic music; he brings a sensitive and exciting sense of exploration to all he plays. Avril Smith, the original flatpicker in Della Mae, is a skilled guitarist who is equally at home in any number of styles. Bassist Brittany Karlson is a first call bass player in the Boston area, and is known for her beautiful tone and exceptional musicality.
