Snowshoeing in Maine

With all the snow that has fallen across the state of Maine in the past couple months, chances are you could strap on your snowshoes and travel to pretty much anywhere from your own front door. If you’re looking to venture across new terrain, however, you might consider making a weekend trip to one of Maine’s many state parks. Sure, these parks aren’t frequented so much in the winter as they are in the summer months, but they make ideal destinations for those seeking some seasonal peace and solitude among the pines. Many of our state parks offer trail systems and keep updated logs of their trail conditions online, and some even include groomed trails for cross-country skiing and/or allow winter camping. Make sure to either call the park you are interested in visiting or check their website before arrival if you are considering winter camping. And, as always, whether planning a weekend stay or an afternoon trek through the woods, make sure to either bring a friend along or let someone know where you are going and when you are expected back.
Below is a list (compiled by maine.gov) of the Maine state parks offering trail services for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing:

Why limit your adventure to a state park? Acadia National Park offers forty-five miles of carriage roads suitable for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The park also allows foot traffic on Park Loop Road, which is unplowed in the wintertime and closed to motor vehicles (for amazing ocean views, Park Loop Road is your best option). Believe it or not, Acadia is almost as beautiful in the wintertime as it is in the summer and fall. Well, let’s face it, Acadia is always beautiful… so if you’re looking for some of the most scenic trails in the state, what are you waiting for? Enjoy the snow while it lasts!
