Feb. 4, Saturday, 8pm, “O’Connor Band featuring Mark O’Connor,” a product of America’s rich aural folk tradition as well as classical music, Mark O’Connor’s creative journey began at the feet of a pair of musical giants. The first was the folk fiddler and innovator who created the modern era of American fiddling, Benny Thomasson; the second, French jazz violinist, considered one of the greatest improvisers in the history of the violin, Stephane Grappelli. Along the way, between these marvelous musical extremes, Mark O’Connor absorbed knowledge and influence from the multitude of musical styles and genres he studied. Now, at age 54, he has melded and shaped these influences into a new American Classical music, and a vision of an entirely American school of string playing. As The Los Angeles Times recently noted, he has“crossed over so many boundaries, that his style is purely personal.” The O’Connor Band, featuring iconic fiddler Mark O’Connor, puts on an engaging, dynamic show featuring compelling arrangements, virtuosic solos, and tight vocal harmonies. Introducing Mark’s family members; Maggie O’Connor – fiddle, Forrest O’Connor – mandolin and vocals and Kate Lee – fiddle and vocals. Rounding out the band is National Flatpick Guitar Champion Joe Smart and double bassist/old-time banjoist Geoff Saunders. Genre: Country, Progressive Bluegrass, Acoustic Pop, Indie Folk, Americana, $34/orchestra, $26/balcony, Collins Center for the Arts, 2 Flagstaff Road, Orono. Feb. 6, Monday, 6pm, “Scott MacMillan & Colin Grant Concert,” Scott Macmillan and Colin Grant, start compiling new and old tunes from their collective traditional and original repertoires. Tunes from Scott’s tune-book “Scoobie Tunes” which hadn’t yet seen action were spun into classical, jazz, funk, rock, and blues directions. While the resulting album Good2Go follows a traditional music path of tunes combined into medleys, the musical interplay between the two musicians speaks to the experience, chops, and element of good-old belly rubbing humor that keeps the tunes on a fun, lively path. For those that may have difficulty navigating stairs… 58 Main is a private home. This event will be held on our second floor and our bathroom is in the basement. We do not have a lift or elevator. We understand that this is a barrier for some and sincerely apologize, $20, 58 Main Street, Bangor. FMI: 207-947-5205, www.58mainbangor.com.
