Jan. 26, Thursday, 7pm, “Novel Jazz Septet,” an evening of music from the Great American Songbook. The musicians of this group have been playing straight-ahead jazz for audiences throughout Maine and beyond for several decades. Collectively, they share over two centuries of experience in the jazz idiom. Jan. 26 and 27, Thursday and Friday, 7pm, “The Servant of Two Masters,” by Carlo Goldoni. The play is a cross between traditional Italian commedia and postmodern Vaudeville and has been described as bold and wild! A tour-de-farce! In the capable hands of MCWS’s tenth grade, silliness and hilarity are guaranteed. Jan. 28, Saturday, 10:30am, “2nd Annual Seed Swap and Workshop: Get ready for Spring,” join Master Gardener Jean Vose at Spectrum Generation’s Coastal Center’s 2nd Annual Seed Swap and saving seeds workshop. The workshop begins at 10:30 with an introduction to seed saving and swapping. Remember to bring your favorite seeds, catalogs and gardening stories to share. Guidelines for swapping seeds: Please do not bring seed collected from hybrid plants, as they won’t grow true to type; no GMO seed; bring any special growing instructions; ex. full sun, moist soil, shade; bring perennial, annual or biannual seeds. Envelopes will be provided for seeds and cards for writing seed information. Jan. 28, Saturday, 7:30pm, “David Mallet,” UUCB Concerts for a Cause series presents singer-songwriter David Mallet, one of America’s true troubadours. He has performed in town halls and folk clubs across America and Europe in addition to major venues such as Barns of Wolf Trap, Newport Folk Festival, and “Prairie Home Companion”. The Bangor Daily News recognized him as one of the 58 most memorable Mainers of the 20th Century. The readers of FOLKWAX (www.folkwax.com) voted him 2003 Artist of the Year and “Artist in Me” 2003 Album of the Year. He has recorded 14 albums, including “The Fable True” (2007), based on Thoreau’s last expedition in 1857, a spoken word CD with accompanying music. David Mallett hails from a small town in northern Maine, and in a career that spans four decades, his music has traveled to all corners of the world. Jan. 28, Saturday, 7:30pm, “The Ballroom Thieves,” this hot rock band disguised as a folk band makes their presence known onstage immediately as the first chord is struck! A rock-infused folk band trio formed in Boston! Stylistically, the trio finds a captivating mélange of acoustic styles, blending folk conventions with modern hymnals, delta blues grit with rich harmonies, exploring the basic constructions of pop music while almost wholeheartedly rejecting its restrictions at the same time.
