Jan. 20, Friday, 7pm, “Christopher Staknys,” 2014 Falmouth High School graduate Christopher Staknys seems to have been born with a keyboard in his hands. He participated in the New England Conservatory’s preparatory program while in high school and now completes his 3rd year of study at the Juilliard School in New York City. A composer as well as pianist, he has been participating in festivals and winning prizes in Maine and Northern New England since his middle school years. Jan. 20-22, Friday-Sunday, 7pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Shrek, the Musical,” When a green ogre named Shrek discovers his swamp has been ‘swamped’ with all sorts of fairytale creatures by the scheming Lord Farquaad, Shrek sets out with a very loud donkey by his side to ‘persuade’ Farquaad to give Shrek his swamp back. Jan. 20-22, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Thurs.-Sat, 2pm/Sun, “1776, the Musical,” the award-winning Broadway musical which tells the behind-the-scenes story of what led up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The story details, in both dramatic and humorous moments, how America’s first congressmen shaped history. The music is catchy and entertaining, and the characters will be intriguing portrayals by local actors of all ages and descriptions, $17, $15/seniors and students, Old North Church, 118 High Street, Farmington. Jan. 21, Saturday, 12:55pm, “The Met: Romeo et Juliette,” The world premiere of this opera was in Théâtre Lyrique, Paris, 1867. Perhaps the most enduringly successful of the many operatic settings of the world’s consummate love story, Roméo et Juliette is an excellent example of French Romanticism, a tradition that values subtlety, sensuality, and graceful vocal delivery over showy effects. In the opera there is a slight shift of focus away from the word games of the original play and a greater focus on the two lovers, who are given four irresistible duets, including a brief final reunion in the tomb scene that does not appear in the play, $20/adults, $18/seniors, Waterville Opera House, 93 Main Street, Waterville.
