Jan. 13, Friday, 7:30pm, “The Hadacol Bouncers,” Featuring songs from such musical legends as Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller and James P. Johnson, the ensemble will play a program of New Orleans jazz, Chicago-style jazz, novelty songs, and other classics from the Great American Songbook. Jan. 14, Saturday, 1pm, “Five Summits: Armchair Adventure Series,” Talk by avid climber Mark Milewski, a Professor in Connecticut who has climbed five of the “Seven Summits” (excluding Australia and Antarctica). He will show pictures and tell stories of his climbing adventures. Mark Milewski is an avid outdoor enthusiast. He thru-hiked the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine in 1997, often backpacking alongside fellow thru-hiker and local resident Dan Day.He has summited the highest peaks in New Hampshire’s White Mountains and New York’s Adirondacks.An Eagle Scout, he currently serves as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 25, Manchester, Connecticut, where he has volunteered for over twenty-five years. Professionally, Milewski is Assistant Professor of Business Administration teaching management courses at Tunxis Community College in Farmington, Connecticut. His current goal is to climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. He reached his 5th peak on May 20, 2016, when he summited 29,029 ft. Mt. Everest. Jan. 14, Saturday, 7pm, “Evening of Jazz featuring Gardenia,” Gardenia is vocalist Cindy Millar who will perform with accompanists Spike Hyssong on bass and Dick White on guitar. Gardenia performs music from Hollywood and Broadway by the composers of The Great American Songbook and the Golden Age of American Song. Jan. 14, Saturday, 7:30pm, “VoXX presents: Music for the New Year,” the mid-coast choral ensemble VoXX: Voice of Twenty announces its annual “Music for the New Year” concert series for 2017, the theme of the winter program, “O Great Mystery,” revolves around the Missa O Magnum Mysterium by Tomás Luis de Victoria (1592), which the group will sing in its entirety, also featured will be unaccompanied works from the thirteenth to the twenty-first century, chosen to explore the mysteries of the season and bring light to the turning of the year, a highlight will be the world premiere of Laudate Dominum, an uplifting SATB carol composed in 2015 by the group’s Music Director, John Mehrmann, in keeping with the group’s wide-ranging interest in fine unaccompanied choral music, other selections will range from sacred to secular to downright saucy by composers from Anonymous to J.S.
