Much to Jack’s consternation, Bella appears to be slowly losing her grip on reality, a loss which, like that of her mother before her, assures her confinement and demise in a state-run asylum for the insane. But is it the dark and sinister house itself that is slowly driving the poor woman out of her mind?…A house where the gaslights brighten and dim without apparent provocation?…Where tapping noises and muffled footsteps can be heard coming from the sealed-off third floor? One evening, while her husband is out, Bella is visited by the amiable Sergeant Rough (Dana Packard) of Scotland Yard, who seems to know a great deal about the history of the wretched house; and what he knows will send Bella on a dangerous and terrifying fight for her life.
