Oct. 15, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Composers on the Edge: Laura Kargul,” Laura Kargul is an internationally recognized pianist who comes from the University of Southern Maine to Nordica to explore with us the intimate and passionate sides of J.S. Bach, Robert Schumann, and Maurice Ravel. Many of us know her for her incandescent Liszt performances, but her repertoire goes far deeper—in this concert she explores in this concert, “Composers on the Edge.” Bach wrote his brilliant “Capriccio on the Departure of His Beloved Brother” (a “capriccio” is a caper, or caprice) presumably to send his brother off to war. Robert Schumann’s passionate Sonata in F-sharp minor is another gift, a display of Schumann’s youthful passion for his beloved Clara Vieck. Ravel’s popular “La Valse” is a rare treat for us; this solo transcription, which appears on Kargul’s latest CD, is infrequently played because of its extreme difficulty. Laura Kargul is Director of Keyboard Studies at University of Southern Maine, and frequently is guest performer at universities and Maine musical societies. Kargul’s performances are always thrilling—extreme sensitivity and powerful orchestral quality combined with introductions that charm, $12, free/under 18 and students, Nordica Auditorium, Merrill Hall, UMF, 224 Main Street, Farmington. Fiddle-icious is directed by Master Fiddler Don Roy considered a living cultural treasure in Maine. This all volunteer organization has members from Kittery to Augusta, $10, $5/students, free/12 and younger, Viles Auditorium, Cony High School, 60 Pierce Drive, Augusta.
